From Bruce Garrioch regarding what the Hurricanes are seeking in return for Tim Gleason:

Quote:
Hurricanes GM Jim Rutherford has been silent on the trade front. That’s partially because Carolina has played better of late, but it also has something to do with his outrageous asking prices for players. League sources said the Hurricanes are asking for either two No. 1 picks or an ‘A’ prospect and a No. 1 pick in exchange for one of pending UFA Ds Tim Gleason, Bryan Allen or Jaroslav Spacek. The price will come down before the deadline ...

Suter update

http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/story/?id=386246

At the NHL All-Star Game's Media Day, Suter told reporters he doesn't think he will sign a new deal with the Predators before the Feb. 27 deadline.

I saw him say that. Nashville will have to move him by the deadline. No way they take a chance on letting him walk and get nothing in return. He is going to command big bucks.

Maybe rehab is the answer. He is just trying to start a bidding war. No way will any team fork that over.

And now from Timmeh...

http://www.csnphilly.com/blog/flyers...838&feedID=704

Quote:
Ryan Suter’s situation of potentially being dealt at the NHL trade deadline next month took an interesting turn on Friday when the Nashville Predators defenseman said he does not want to re-sign before the deadline.

He is unrestricted while fellow coveted teammate Shea Weber is restricted. One of them could be dealt.

The Flyers are among a handful of clubs interested in getting into the mix if that happens.

“I feel it would be more of a distraction than anything,” Suter said of signing in February. “We’ve never had a timeline or deadline. We’re just focusing on winning. Everything else will take care of itself.

“I don’t see it being a benefit by hurrying up and trying to get something done. I’m a Nashville Predator until July. I will focus on making my team better.”

They also could try to make another run in the playoffs. Their team lost in the Western Conference finals and every game was decided by a single goal lead. They are currently 5th in the West though the 6th seed is currently tied with them. Trading Suter would greatly hurt their chances in the playoffs (and possible making it to the playoffs), and doing well in or winning the playoffs could allow them to re-sign him.

- I just calculated the Predators possible cap space for next season assuming that they keep the same players that they had this season. I entered in possible cap hits that I thought might be reasonable based solely on statistics since I don't actually watch the Predators, and they would have enough space to carry a full roster with a little cap room. However, they 5 players they would have at least 5 RFA players to re-sign at the end of the season, and more importantly there is the issue if they can truly afford spending to near the top of the cap.

FORWARDS
Martin Erat ($4.500m) / David Legwand ($4.500m) / Mike Fisher ($4.200m)
Patric Hornqvist ($3.083m) / Nick Spaling ($1.050m) / Jerred Smithson ($0.800m)
Colin Wilson ($2.300m) / Matt Halischuk ($0.712m) / Sergei Kostitsyn ($4.500m)
Craig Smith ($0.715m) / Blake Geoffrion ($1.500m) / Jordin Tootoo ($2.050m)

DEFENSEMEN
Ryan Ellis ($1.440m) / Kevin Klein ($1.350m)
Roman Josi ($1.000m) / Ryan Suter ($7.500m)
Shea Weber ($7.500m) / Jonathon Blum ($1.200m)
Francis Bouillon ($1.350m)

GOALTENDERS
Pekka Rinne ($7.000m) / Anders Lindback ($1.500m)

BUYOUTS: J.P. Dumont ($1.333m) / Brett Lebda ($0.466m)

CAPGEEK.COM TOTALS (follow @capgeek on Twitter)
(these totals are compiled without the bonus cushion)
SALARY CAP: $64,300,000; CAP PAYROLL: $62,551,333; BONUSES: $725,000
CAP SPACE (21-man roster): $1,748,667

edit- Even if Pronger is on LTIR for the rest of his contract, realistically we can't afford Suter (around 7.5 million- Weber's hit) anyways unless we trade a more expensive player like JVR (who they may not want consider he has not proven himself like Suter has) and there is a bonus cushion with the new CBA which would significantly reduce Schenn's cap hit, and reduce Bob's as well.

No, for reasons that are not entirely hockey related. Subban is a good player, and JvR has yet to show a full season of bad-assery (with fair excuses at the moment). It would be selling low on JvR (and probably buying somewhat low on SUbban who ins't having an amazing sophomore year).

Yeah, I'm seeking a free gold ingot. Somehow I doubt I'll get one.

What? Who cares about past transgressions with the team? Hes a right handed offensive defensemen that can play some D and throw his weight around when he needs to? If we aren't getting Suter or Weber and Subban is available how can you say no?

Quite easily, actually.

I don't want that type of attitude anywhere near the Flyers.

Besides, the price is quite high giving up JVR for PK.

early 20s second line wing with good first line upside.

early 20s number three dman with good first pairing upside.

You're overrating JVR if you think that value is bad. I'd much prefer to save JVR for a trade for a Suter or Weber, a true #1 dman. So maybe you wouldn't trade him for a guy like Subban, but it certainly shouldn't be because the value is bad.

I also think the bad attitude thing is overrated.

Just like this: NO, simple the guy isn't a Flyer, his style isn't what the fan base here is going to latch onto, yeah he's a good Dman, nothing special nothing to write home about, and his attitude just seems more cocky than confident, and not that it matters but I wouldn't want to see him in Orange sorry man

Nashville lost in a tight six-game series in the Western semi-finals, not the finals (the first series win in franchise history).

All of the sudden, everyone thinks they are a contender for the SC?

I'm not trying to nitpick--I think this is an important point. Much of the logic around not moving Suter hinges upon the assumption that Nashville can make a deep run. I just don't see it. Their forward corps is just too weak (remember--last year's success was the product, in part, of a PPG campaign by Joel Ward), and I think its unreasonable to expect that they can win 12-16 games in the playoffs.

None of this is to say that they should move Suter for nothing--but it's an awful big risk assuming that they can keep him on the basis of a deep playoff run. The only reason it makes sense, I think, is if they believe that they cannot get Weber signed long-term if they trade Suter.

Too much sizzle, not enough steak with this guy. He has the skills to be fantastic, and might be one day, but he isn't the steady presence we need right now. I would take Gleason over him for the Flyers current needs.
