He has a plenty of detractors, no doubt.

That is a very civil way to phrase that. I don't think I have ever heard him discussed so politely.

I'm not trying to nitpick--I think this is an important point. Much of the logic around not moving Suter hinges upon the assumption that Nashville can make a deep run. I just don't see it. Their forward corps is just too weak (remember--last year's success was the product, in part, of a PPG campaign by Joel Ward), and I think its unreasonable to expect that they can win 12-16 games in the playoffs.

None of this is to say that they should move Suter for nothing--but it's an awful big risk assuming that they can keep him on the basis of a deep playoff run. The only reason it makes sense, I think, is if they believe that they cannot get Weber signed long-term if they trade Suter.
I don't watch Nashville games so perhaps you are right on their ability to make it. However, as you pointed out with the possibility of losing Weber, and hurting their playoff chances I would say it might be worth it to keep him until the playoffs are over and try to re-sign him.

Depends what they get in return. If they get only futures, then yes I agree. But if they trade him for a forward that can score now (+ whatever extra) it might make sense for them. Their defense can take a hit in favor of getting some offense. They have one of the top goalies in the league plus a deep defensive squad. I don't know exactly what their budget is in if they are going to go all in for a Cup run this season, but if they traded Suter for some offense, then traded some of their futures for a replacement for Suter (obviously not a guy of his caliber but just a different defender) they could be in a better position than they are now.

I would trade Scehnn in a heartbeat, he's not going to be as good as everyone thinks either is his brother, I'm not sure what all the obsession over these two kids are.

I would not bring Carle back, he's too soft and has been subpar for the most part in his Flyers career

And sadly I think Prongs is done, period , will not play another hockey game again .

Oh and Bryzgalov is still a bum and will not win the Flyers a SC

In Ottawa, Suter came out at Friday’s Media Day and announced for the first time that he would not be signing a new extension with the Predators before the trading deadline so that he could focus on the season at hand.

On the surface, Suter’s interesting announcement would seem to suggest that he would be available before the deadline. Surely, Nashville wouldn’t want to lose his services without getting at least something in return before he is able to walk on July 1, right?

In reality, that doesn’t seem to be the case. Word circulating through the general manager’s ranks is that Suter will be kept off the market.

“The consensus among us is that Nashville will be hanging onto him, even if they know the odds are not in their favor of re-signing him,” one Eastern Conference GM told the Daily News on condition of anonymity. “If he does decide to trade him, [David] Poile has the market cornered. There are very few defensemen of Suter’s caliber in the league and Nashville has two of them.

“You have to wonder whether the Predators can continue to trade away their top players for prospects because they can’t afford to pay them.”

Gleason off the table.

RT @nhl_canes: The Canes have signed defenseman Tim Gleason to a four-year, $16 million extension: http://carhur.com/cre

well according to Dave Isaac on twitter (davegisaac), JVR is practicing today. Wonder if that means there is a Luke Schenn trade in the near future.

Should have tried to get Gleason though, with every good D-man that is unavailable, the cost of another one goes up.

Holmgren has JvR propped up with coat hangers and binder twine, just so he can dangle him for a top Dman.

I don't think the Schenn deal goes down, myself.

Gleason? No, first two years are no-trade, he wants to stay there.

I think technically the NTC wouldn't kick in until next year, when the new contract starts; but people are delusional if they think a "sign and trade" would happen. This isn't the NBA. When is the last time we actually saw a "sign and trade"? I certainly can't remember.

And don't give me Carter, that was months later. I know Setoguchi was traded this offseason shortly after signing a deal. However, I don't think that was planned. To me, a "sign and trade" means signing a player SO THAT you can trade him.
