Southern Tier Economic Development is the owner of the building, but the Afr family, who owns the Elmira Jackals, is responsible for paying taxes and fees.
The Afr’s currently owe just over $136,000; Chemung County officials said the family is three years behind on payments.
Did this stupid company do their research before they agreed to that deal??? Why would anyone agree to that?
Man.... that is a ridiculously bad arrangement for the team.
The owners are terrible. It's there track record to do something of this nature. But the team might not get to finish the season. The good news is this MIGHT force a sale. Word was Terry Pegula was interested until he found this out. But now with a foreclosure staring Afr right in the face he has ZERO barganing power.
this is the Afr's and this is the exact tact, NFS, that got Tamer and the family banned from ever operating a franchise in the AHL, as far back as 1999, WHICH IS WHY Louisville only lasted 2 seasons and no other league has ever considered them since....

STED still owns the arena, but a judge will probably sign a foreclosure order for it and other affected properties in the next 10 days, Santulli said. Once the order is signed, the property will belong to the county.
After that, there's a "redemption period" that starts when the judge signs the order and ends Feb. 29, during which owners can get their properties back by paying the overdue balance, plus a 10 percent penalty.
For the arena, that amount totals $136,234.
"The only person now that can redeem the property is the owner," Santulli said. "And the owner is STED. ... It's up to STED whether they decide to do this or not."
The development agency has no assets other than the arena, he said.
Santulli did not want to speculate about what the county might do with an arena.
"I think this has to play out, and then the county is going to have to make a decision," he said. "One thing I'm very sure of is that the county's not going to go into the arena business."

Even if STED doesn't redeem the property, the City of Elmira is still making loan payments to the federal government for the arena.
Quote:
Elmira Mayor Sue Skidmore, who took office this month, said she believes the city would still have financial obligations after a foreclosure, but she's not sure of the specifics. City Manager John Burin and STED sources could not be reached.
Tamer Afr and arena General Manager Robbie Nichols did not return phone calls Saturday, and Mostafa Afr also could not be reached.
Good to know nobody involved here knows how to pick up or use a phone...
This is gunna go down one of two ways....Afr will make the payment at the 11th hour and the team will finish the season but his future in Elmira is all but over or it's going to go to an auction which would be interesting.
I live here, in Elmira, and we use to have a top notch ball club, the Elmira Pioneers,, well Chemung County owns their home, Dunn Field, and guess what, they DO nothing, it's gone down hill, the County doesn't care, and now we have a college league playing there, Babe himself played in Dunn Field, now we are lucky if 25 people attend a game.
If Chemung County ends up owning the Arena....well, based on history..... it will end up being a practice arena for youth hockey if that.....
This goes to show you what happens when out of town people own places... they just don't care.

Please let the Sabres buy the arena....please.
To be fair, Dunn Field iks like well over 100 years old. Interesting in Sundays paper they talked about how they wanted to move the Pioneers back in the late 80's to build an arena on the Southside.
I also think losing affiliated ball hurt. The pioneers went from the peak of where a minor league team could go to unaffiliated independent ball.
Contradictory. You say the county owning things is bad but then you say out of town owners would suck. Basically either or IMHO.
No way can Youth Hockey pay the bills for that arena to still operate.
got a suspicion, LS, just like Louisville and Port Huron before them, Elmira is likely going to be a footnote in hockey lore, just like Augusta and Fresno 2 years ago when they collapsed and other former ECHL markets that have basically said not interested in hockey at any level, Roanoke, VA comes to mind.

Not giving up yet, the owners of the facility want it back. What happens from there who knows.

Augusta is actually part of the SPHL right now and are doing very well for themselves
This is not the first time that Elmira Downtown Arena has defaulted on its taxes, Santulli said. It entered into an installment agreement to pay taxes on Oct. 31, 2007, and defaulted March 31, 2008. The default was paid off on Jan. 20, 2009, the last day possible, he said.

No payment yet. It's due a week from tomorrow. We have a game that night, OH BOY.
I can't figure out where the hell this is gunna go. I know that season ticket holders just got playoff ticket info sent out but not season ticket renewals, nwhich have always come hand in hand here.
