He has great straight line speed. Not very agile side to side, but he is 6'4. He seems like a real character kid. Plus he grew up in Montreal. I think we should keep him.

I edited the thread title to hopefully put an end to the mass confusion.

By more upside you mean a potential decent 3rd liner yeah, but no where near a top 6 imo

Nice try, but did very little to reduce my shock-level.

EDIT: Blunden has really flourished with Cunneyworth. He does indeed have the "Knuble potential". He has produced in juniors and in the minors as well, and just turned 25 a few weeks ago.

Even with the title edit, it still scared me. Now I know how Blues fans felt about the Tarasenko trade.

I have to admit, I was wrong about Blunden. Given his age, numbers and how lost he looked in his first dozen games, I was certain he was a non-NHL'er. Now he looks like he belongs.

Where does he fit in going forward? My instinct is that White will be a more useful player, even after the injury. IMO the Bertuzzi and Knuble comps for Blunden in this thread are batshift crazy. But can Blunden develop into a Moen/Kostopoulos level player?

Looking for interesting storylines (assuming the Habs don't make a miracle playoff run) for the rest of the season, Blunden seems to be one of them. He has a coach that seems to like him. If he's going to make a career for himself, now's the time.

I've been surprised by Blunden as well but he was still a second rounder so there has always been some potential in him. He obviously lacks skills to be a top6 player right now but he can be a dependable bottom six player for sure.

If he works on his weaknesses he can become an important piece. Anyhow good (and potentially great) trade by Gauthier, he got a NHLer for a career AHLer!

Blunden is a career fourth liner but he has a career in the NHL.

Russell seems to be a tweener right now. He has two goals and no assists in the NHL this season. If he plays in the NHL he is only there for his offensive skill.

As of right now Blunden serves much, much more of a purpose than what Russell would have served as a Hab.

Great trade.

Something for nothing.

AFAIK Russell has always been a solid defensive player and an offensive threat on the PK so I think he has future in the NHL as Richard Park type of player. His size is the reason why he wasn't in the NHL till Columbus said **** it and called him up.

I don't know how much you actually watch out of town games/players, or how much you pay attention to them when/if you do, but in terms of how they move around the ice, their most effective tools, and how they use their bodies to position themselves to get opportunities to use those tools, Blunden is much closer to Bertuzzi/Knuble than Moen or Kostopoulos, imoi.

I understand that you're caught up on the "skill tier"/position in the depth chart thing, but I'm talking about comparable in terms of taking the names/numbers off the jerseys, watching from out of face recognition range, and trying to tell the difference(s) between the players. IMO, you could almost mistake Blunden for Knuble, if you weren't keen enough to tell the skill level difference. The differences in hands/release/size would never allow me to mistake Blunden for Moen or Kostopoulos, let alone how they skate, position themselves, etc.

If you're talking about some other point of comparison, that's obviously fine. But if you're talking in terms of "team composition", or whatever, I submit that it's best to think in terms of his skills/attributes (particularly his best ones) instead of his "asset worth", or similar. Does that really sound so "bat**** crazy" to you?

It did not occur to me that you might be talking about their skating styles. Though to be fair, that was not clear in your previous post. I apologize for being rude.

I was talking in terms of role. Wondering whether Blunden has enough upside to eventually fill a Kosto type role - not whether the physical mechanics of his play are similar.
