This is an alarmist article that doesn't present the facts.

The reality is:

1) It assumes that having a 10 percent concussion rate is like adding 10 percent or more to your payroll. The reality is that this varies by situation but rarely would this be the case, and in most circumstances it would be mostly within control of the club. For instance the Penguins will not and cannot just go out and find another Crosby and pay him the $7M/yr he's paid. If your payroll committment is $60M it doesn't automatically become $67M when Crosby is shelved.

2) The 30 teams of the league could underwrite policies to protect itself

3) Insurers are in the business of making money and sharing risk with their customers. They have the option of raising premiums or reducing coverage as needed to come to a compromising position that insurer/insured can live with.

The notion that concussions and the big bad insurance companies are going to bring the league to it's knees is the angle of a writer who is alarmist and doesn't understand his subject very well.

I'm thinking that this means its more likely the league gets even more serious about preventing concussions as it is having financial impact, than it means any teams will be brought to ruin.

Back to undeclared concussions. Teams and players alike will start using "whiplash" and other diagnoses that have PCS to go around this.
