Rangers top 2 are both 6', 182 and 195lbs
Boston's top 2 guys are 6'1" and 5'11 and 194 and 178lbs
Those are the top 3 teams in the NHL with Boston also winning the cup last year.
Instead of worrying about Plekanec we should get him a high end skill winger, the role Cammy was supposed to play.
Plekanec has been given all the wingers on this team in the past couple of years including Cammalleri for the 2 1/2 years he was here and he produced 50 and 47pts for a top sniper he is supposed to be. Koivu never had wingers like that how much more wingers we need to find for him? How about we change the centerman
Here's what I'd try to do if I were PG until the next season.
Trade deadline:
Move Moen, preferably for a 2nd rounder. Worst case scenario, a 3rd rounder.
Move Gill, preferably for a 3rd rounder. Worst case scenario, a 4th rounder.
Move Campoli, same as Gill. Try to get whatever you can for him.
Move Kostitsyn, only if the return is a 1st rounder or a legit prospect. If we can't get any better than a 2nd rounder, sign him to another 3,5M/3years contract. He has great chemistry with Eller nd not many players can score 20+ goals playing on a third line. Also, he's one of our most physical forward.
Try to move Kaberle if the return is decent, i.e. 2nd rounder or more. If not, rather keep him as a PP specialist for next year. He's been playing well since he's been on the Habs, even if some bipolar fans act as if he had the worst contract in the league.
Bring in Leblanc to take Moen's place. Give him quality ice time, around 15 minutes per game, on the third line.
Let the kids play (Weber, Diaz, St-Denis) to take Gill's and Campoli's TOI.
If Kostitsyn is traded, call-up Palushaj and try him on the third line for the remainder of the season.
If Gionta wasn't hurt, I'd 100% try to ship him to St. Louis to team up with Arnott and Langenbrunner. I think St. Louis would have done that deal for Stewart+3rd.

They traded Erik Johnson and their 1st round pick to acquire Stewart, it's going to take a lot more then Brian Gionta if we want a shot at getting a player like Chris Stewart

A year ago, everyone was in love with the idea of Carter centering our first line. Yes, he's had a bad year (as has everyone in Columbus) and he's been injured. But he's still young, big and skilled. I have no idea about his off-ice issues or his leadership skills, but I agree with you that he should be a trade acquisition for Montreal.

People, drop the Kesler trades. The cost would be astronomical to the point of hurting us more than helping. You want him, then it starts at Plekanec, Pacioretty and Subban otherwise Vancouver does not even entertain the idea. Frankly, they are still liable to refuse. Kesler is virtually as untouchable as you can get.
We are not acquiring elite players, and essentially not a center of that caliber, without an overpayment, thus defeating the point of a rebuild/retool. You acquire these players through young prospects who haven't proven anything; Hodgson for example, or via the draft. Signing a plethora of UFAs or making mediocre trades will produce the same results we've had for nearly two decades. We tried a band-aid solution after the Koivu era an it blew up in our face now. Can we do it right this time?
Plekanec pacioretty and subban to START. Hmmm. I realize Kesler is important but he's like mike Richards, who did not get that return himself. I agree with you that it's generously optimistic to pry him from vancouver. However, I think it's very pessismtic to suggest such a package wouldn't garner their interest over the summer.

They won't give away Carter for nothing, it'll take loads more than this. Plekanec will have to be included in this deal for talks to even begin.

Yes they got Shattenkirk but in the end the player they wanted was Stewart and the big piece going back was the 1st overall pick in 2006 Johnson as well as the 11th overall pick last year going to Colorado. We ain't going to get Stewart for cheap and he wasn't bad at all last year when they traded for him. He had 23 pts last year after being traded in 25 games. This year he hasn't done very well but they still won't give him up for a guy like Brian Gionta, come on
Our D core is too small and lacks physical edge, this is true for most of our system, with the exception of Tinordi. Our 4th line isn't even close to intimidating. If we just 'let the kids play' next year we'll be in the lottery. The solutions aren't in the minors. Some pieces, yes, but the whole org is lacking size and grit.
I'd go for Jeff Carter. His contract is intense, granted, but he could be had for less than any other top line big center. Proven 30-40 goal guy, and his cap hit is only 5.2.
