Shero just wanted to add another injury to the collection: "Missed the last 44 games of the regular season and all 12 playoff games (right left injury)." (from Forecaster). A right left, eh?

For what it's worth, the rest of his Forecaster profile:

ASSETS: Has excellent hockey sense and offensive instincts. Is an above-average playmaking center with some goal-scoring ability, as well.
FLAWS: Lacks ideal size and also defensive polish for the pivot position. Also doesn't play much of a physical game.
CAREER POTENTIAL: Playmaking center with size issues.

Doubt a kid this small and soft will last long with Bylsma, but the Pens could use some offensive creativity and I guess they're hoping to catch lightning in a bottle. Not much risk since it's re-entry waivers.

This is sort of a head-scratcher. But I guess it's worth it if it means we never see Williams or McDonald here anymore, he'll be a little cheaper to have on the roster as well since he was claimed on re-entry waivers.

He'll cost us a little bit over 100k, which is way less than other call ups do. Be-bye McDonald.

He's 6 foot 188. It's not like he's tiny. Admittedly, I don't know much about him, but unless he's afraid of being hit, I think he'll be fine.

Shouldn't be too bad of a move. I expect him to play with Sullivan after our game tonight unless Sullivan continues to be in beast mode.

Yea its to save money by claiming someone who is nhl capable who costs like a third of these other call ups.

Still has potential too

The height/weight vary. I've seen him listed at 5'11" and 180 as well. He looks like Letestu to me. He's a smallish, offensive minded, bottom 6 center.

I thought this as well when I first heard we claimed him. Though Letestu is more physical, better on faceoffs, and probably a better shooter. O'Reilly's a better playmaker and a better skater, from what I recall.

It will be interesting to see how O'Reilly fits in the Pens lineup. He's not exactly a Bylsma-type player. He's not physical, isn't great defensively, doesn't really grind.

I wonder if Staal's injury is taking longer to heal than first thought? Or is this an insurance move because Sid's return is such a question mark? Otherwise, I'm not sure where O'Reilly is an upgrade on our current roster. He's not a better 4th line center than Vitale or Park, and he's not going to add more offense while still being solid defensively on the 3rd line than Jeffrey.

That's a good point. 1 game of "re-entry waivers Cal O'reilly" costs 60% of 1 game of Eric Tangradi and 80% of 1 game of Jason Williams.

Of course, if we tried to send him down and he were claimed again, we'd be on the hook for 35 games of a 500k blank roster spot.

Finally, the Chris Conner replacement that absolutely NOBODY was asking for.

I hate this move

This has "crappier and more overpaid version of Mark Letestu" written all over it

Guys, at least he has skill. Sure beats trading a first or second rounder for yet another bottom sixer like Travis Moen.

If Crosby returns, O'Reilly's irrelevant. If Crosby doesn't come back, O'Reilly could be a factor. If Bylsma dicks him around, that's not on Shero (or O'Reilly).

He makes even less than Letestu given re-entry waivers and his contract is up at the end of the season if we no longer want him.

No risk/high gain move.

Agreed. I have no problem with this move so long as it's not our only one.

Edit: I should say that I wouldn't mind Moen on this team either since our bottom 6 lacks size.

So basically we got a 4th rounder for Letestu and picked up his replacement for free. I'll take it.

1st or 2nd rounder aside (Montreal was fine with ditching Cammy for Bourque; they aren't going to want a first for someone like Moen), no, it really doesn't.

I'm not much of a Moen fan, but if the choices are a fancy skill guy who will score 6-10 goals or a forechecking board player who will score 6-10 goals, the second guy's the more valuable and useful player. And not by a little bit, either. This is why guys like Stan Chistov wash out and guys like Ian Laperriere have long careers.

We got a little bit of skill for nothing. If he sucks who cares, we don't play him anymore. If he does well, Shero gets another steal.

Convert to wing he'll be good for 45 with Sid.

While I agree that our bottom six lacks size this year, and it bothers me, the Habs won't be selling Moen as a bottom sixer per se. They'll try to max out on his career numbers and the fact he's played most of the season with skilled forwards (and helped guys like Lars Eller and Andrei Kostitsyn, in particular).

If we want a bottom sixer, we should talk to Anaheim about George Parros. If we talk to Montreal, it should be about Kostitsyn, not Moen. I don't want to lose a second round pick on a bottom sixer...not when we need a winger for our second scoring line (whether Sid's on it or not).

EDIT: I just wanted to add that I actually like Travis Moen, a lot. He's not what we need, though. Not unless we start dumping smaller, similar types (like Matt Cooke, for example).
