The only thing that bugs me about DL's love affair with ex-Flyers is that we don't play the same style as the Flyers. I like grind it out hard-nosed hockey too, but that's only half of the Flyers game. The other half focuses on speed and a quick tempo game, and DL has built us to play the opposite, from the bench out.
I wonder why he doesn't mold the team like Philly if he likes Philly players so much.
Gagne was brought in because he was all that was left to get after the Kings were forced to take a 4th liner for a guy who, for all his faults, did have 23 goals and 47 points last year. Couple that with Penner's 3 goal effort so far, and the combined 10 goals that the Kings have gotten from their top 2 LWers going into the season is a huge reason they're last in the league in offense.
Going into the summer, Penner is a UFA, and who knows what the deal will be with Gagne. One way or another, the Kings will need at least 1 more winger that can score. It's probably not going to come quickly through the draft, and the top free agents aren't going to show up in LA. Then again, if the Kings could sign someone that would hit just 20 goals, let alone 40, that would be a massive improvement over what they have now. The Kings will probably have to trade for somebody, and not just for the rest of this season. Be it in a deadline move, a trade at the draft, over the summer, at camp, etc, it'll have to happen at some point. If it can be done now, that helps for this season, plus the future.
Actually, the majority of people in the know thought it was going to be Hemsky.
But by all means, tell me another time Lombardi dealt for a guy that was rumored to be coming to L.A. for some time.
Sorry, no they didn't. Everyone knew the cost of Hemsky was Schenn, and DL wasn't going to pay that. Penner was the long rumoured choice.
And no, I'm not going to go dig around for who was/wasn't rumoured to be coming here and did/didn't. You made your post, I showed you an example otherwise. Done.
Besides, much of DL's campaign has been rebuilding, not gearing up for a cup run, so we haven't had many big trades at all period. Smyth, Richards, Penner and Jack Johnson are about the only big ones off the top of my head. Cloutier as well if you call that a big deal, but if you do that one was also rumoured since it was widely known Cloutier was on his way out after Luongo came to Vancouver and we had just hired his BFF Marc Crawford as coach.
Gagne should be waived. That's all I have to say. I had a feeling he would be a liability and that is exactly what happened. 4.5mil a year for like 4 goals and a season ending concussion which we all know he is prone to.
He has 7 goals (6th on the team despite missing the last 16 games) and his cap hit is 3.5M.

Everyone knew?
I didn't know, Reaper obviously didn't know. I am also going to go out of a limb and say that Johnny Knoxville didn't know about it either.

Mmmmm yeah, I'm pretty sure that the asking price for Hemsky included Schenn and Dean quickly turned his thoughts somewhere else. Not that he didn't ask about Hemsky a few times, but each time the answer came back Schenn + and Dean wouldn't do it.

Did you hear about this rumor last Jan/Feb?
Or should I add you to the list of people than previously did not hear about it?
IMO Dean is still going to be his passive self and not be willing to risk a big move for a big name player. I expect DL to pick up a big body winger that can play on the 3rd or 4th line and is sound defensively. I don't see him offering more than a 2nd round draft pick and maybe a 2nd or 3rd tier prospect.
"Lombardi's first choice would be a left-winger, which brings Penner into play when we're talking about Tambellini."
Just a few examples. It was reported out there that Penner to the Kings was a well discussed option prior to the trade deadline. It's why the main board was flooded with Penner to LA proposals for weeks if not months before the deal went down. Go back and reread this thread (which you posted all the way through):
You see several references to posters mentioning what Kings fans were offering, Oilers fans were asking for for Penner. It was heavily discussed prior to the actual trade. I'm surprised at the lack of memory on the subject. PTSD?
Not worth overpaying at the deadline. Rather re-sign Quick this offseason and package Bernier and a couple prospects/picks for a player than trade a 1st for a marginal upgrade.
I knew that too. I was talking more about the asking price of Schenn.
Oh, yes I knew that Schenn is what the Oilers were after. I think Dean went back to them with a couple of times with offers for Hemsky that did not include Schenn and the Oilers said no. Dean settled for Penner.
Bottom line is they were looking for a setup man to get Kopitar the puck in shooting areas instead of the other way around.
