Staal, imo, is still the second most valuable player on the Rangers roster, regardless of how well McDonagh and Girardi have played. He's a bona fide #1 dmen who's game is still improving.
It would take a massive overpayment to pry him from the Rangers. The pubescent fools here that believe Staal is expendible have yet to watch playoff hockey, and ultimately don't understand how vital competent dmen are later in the year.
While a healthy Staal would be on our top pairing easily, right now, I just don't see us moving Ryan with a defenseman as a centerpiece. We currently have about 8.8 million tied up in stay-at-home types next season. Staal bumps it up to about 12.8 million. Sbisa and Beauchemin are locked into our top 4 at this point, while being paired up with Fowler and Lubo. Our organization is pretty high on Sbisa, he was the major prospect in the Pronger trade, and we're going to give him the opportunities to keep pushing for more minutes.
Just a thought, but the Ducks could then flip Lubo for a nice return, and draft another OFD with their first this year and be stacked on D for a long time?
