I couldn't believe this when I was looking up PK and PP percentages and whatnot for the season and others. The current record for PK efficiency is 89.25% held by the 99-00 Dallas Stars.
We're currently clipping along at 89.6% The Devils interestingly are at 89.4% which would also beat the all time record also if their pace is kept up.
In the season of fail (especially PP fail) it's good to see a sign like this.
Too bad our PP is so bad, if it was even middle of the pack I am convinced they would be in the top 8. So many 1 goal games they have lost and others where they outplayed the opposition but lost and one more PP goal would have sealed the deal.
Anyways it is still something to be proud of I guess, they are elite at something.

I know what you mean, seems like this season there have been a lot of:
- Losses by 1 goal
- Losses by 2 goals (including empty net)
- Losses in OT
- Losses in SO
Add up all the points lost there and you have a better reflection of where the team could be. Not saying they don't deserve to be 14th right now, because they do, but I don't think this team is really that bad. Minor tweaks and hopefully a better 2012-2013!

So true. It's gotten to the point where I just deflate even if they do get a PP opportunity. They're way too static....are poor at gaining the zone....don't move the puck around nearly enough. It's just brutal.
We also have given up the fewest shots per 60min of any team in the league, by a fair amount. It's a shame this is probably the last year we'll see Gill on the PK. However, I think Subban is an underrated PK'er (among other underrated parts of his game).
2- I doubt we will keep it up if we trade players like Gill, Moen and Darche.
3- we hope we're going to start getting hurt there, will help us tank

Barring some miraculous turnaround (which is doubtful), we'll certainly lose Moen and Gill. Gill is a massive part of our status, I believe. In addition, Plekanec's name has been tossed around, so our PK will be under the assault of the NHL trade market.
The PP will lose some steam when Gill and Moen are traded (its coming), so I don't see a record in our future.
That said, the fact that those guys are #1 and #4 in ice time for the best PK in not just the NHL this year, but one thats on pace to be the best ever, should raise their trade value
How do you explain the league best shots against at 4v5, then? The Habs' save % 4v5 is 7th in the league, good but not great.
While I don't agree it's all Price (Plekanec, Subban, Gorges, and Gill are great on the PK), Price's strength of reducing rebounds helps the shots against and his strength of puck handling reduces the opponent's ability to dump the puck in and set up.

There is little doubt about that in my mind. To me, the PP is the #1 reason the team is where it's at.
Screw that -- with our current goal differential, we should be in the freaking playoffs as it is, bad PP, injuries and all.
The Habs' #1 problem is one of pure timing. They lose too many one-goal games.
This is where Markov would make the difference and why his supporters are hoping he returns healthy. The guy is a game changer when he is on, plain and simple. I miss you you Andrei!
