The Philadelphia Flyers announced today that they have acquired 6-1, 207-lb right wing Matt Ford from the Washington Capitals in exchange for defenseman Kevin Marshall, according to general manager Paul Holmgren. Ford has been assigned to the Flyers’ American Hockey League affiliate, the Adirondack Phantoms.

Used as an role player within the Badgers, Ford never totaled more than 13 points in each of his four seasons, but helped Wisconsin win the National Championship as a sophomore in 2006.

I don't get it. Marshall was nothing special here, but I thought he was adequate as an emergency fill-in? We moved him for a substantially older, career AHL forward?

Hey DFF (since quoting doesnt work). You forgot to say

"What a steal by Homer! Bestest GM in Flyers history!!!!"

But yea, back on the real non-troll topic, Ford is a career AHL guy. Purely an AHL move I guess. They have been having some scoring trouble.

A few years back, wasn't there a trade brewing with Marshall, where another team wanted Marshall for a significant piece? Too bad we didn't pull the trigger then, but hindsight is 20/20.

Anyone know anything about Matt Ford?

He looks like worst case, he could bring some needed offense to the Phantoms.

Even though I doubt this will come back to haunt us, it seems a little strange to me. Even if Marshall likely never will amount to anything special at the NHL level, he's still fairly young. This time last year, it appeared that Bourdon was busting. I'd rather hold on to Marshall a little longer than getting a career AHL forward in return.

YES. This will DEFINITELY make up for prongers absence.

I honestly think Marshall is approaching his ceiling as an AHL reg/NHL emergency call-up. He's not big enough to play his type of game at the NHL IMO.

I wish we could have at least got a pick out of him. Any deal that looks to solely impact the Phantoms doesn't interest me.

Not that it has anything to do with this, but wasn't Marshall part of the "You better shape up or you're gone" talks Homer had with a few Phantoms last year?

We are going for the cup!! Itīs obvious!!

But donīt expect the Stanley itīs more of a Calder Cup.

Great move....

former 2nd round pick with solid nhl performance over a career ahl player who is old enough to be the father of our rookies in the nhl.....

Homer make himself a monkey....

Why trade him for a 3 round pick and take hyka with this pick

No one will draft him because all of the 30 teams want to sign him after the season as an ufa, and than he signs a 9 year 30 Million Dollar contract with Flyers because Snider had said after another disappointed Playoffs that he never ever wanted to see fewer ufa signings in this team. So Homer is on a mission again!

Hyka will be the next monster signing!! book it

But really do we need another useless contract? We are at the borderline of our # of Contracts.... so why take a spot with FORD!!!!

With Washington.

Edit ... the full trade:

Flyers received the 41st pick in 2007 (CAR-PIT-SJ-WAS-PHI) and drafted Kevin Marshall.
Flyers traded the 84th pick in 2007 (NAS-PHI-WAS) to Washington who drafted Phil DeSimone.
Flyers traded what would be the 58th pick in 2008 (PHI-WAS) to Washington who drafted Dmitri Kugryshev.
