Now that Tim Gleason has signed a four-year, $16-million extension with Carolina, the Flyers may turn their attention to two other defensemen: The Hurricanes' Bryan Allen and Montreal's Hal Gill.
Allen, a rugged 6-foot-5, 226-pounder, is on the Flyers' radar, according to a league source. He would have to waive a no-trade clause in order to be dealt.
Allen, 31, has a $2.9 million cap hit and he can become an unrestricted free agent after the season. (In case you were wondering, he was not with Carolina when Flyers coach Peter Laviolette was there.)
As for the 6-7, 244-pound Gill, there is believed to be a difference of opinion about him in the Flyers' organization. He has been very solid in the last two playoffs.
Gill, 36, can also become an unrestricted free agent on July 1, and reports out of Montreal indicate he will be dealt. He has a $2.25 million cap hit.
Would be very happy with this deal. Would be a perfect fit on the flyers. This is very good news, as it essentially means that homer is not willing to morgage the future like previous years for a cup run. It never works, and its about time we looked at building a team.
What's worrisome about Allen is that he's had his knee surgically repaired a number of times now and he's definitely lost a step or two along the way. Now, the good news is that he's averaging about 19 minutes a night, which makes for a great third pairing defender. If the Flyers are going to go with a top four of Timonen, Coburn, Carle and Meszaros, then yeah, Allen fits right in and can be paired with a guy like Gustafsson who can roam a bit more. Not sure if Bourdon would be a great fit with Allen though.

Those knees would be my main concern as well. I've really liked Allen previously, but he's definitely lost a step the past few seasons. He is a warrior though, and I think I would prefer him over someone like Gill at this point. I wouldn't pay much to get him though.
I would take Sutton over both of them. Gill is tempting because if he does have one more playoff run in him he can be a fustrating to play against with his shot blocking and reach. Plus, he is well respected by officials which helps.
I wonder who Homer will get between now and the 27th? You know he is going to pull the trigger on some sort of deal. Does he go mega? Like Suter or Weber. Large, like Schenn. Or small, like Allen. Should be interesting.
I'm a Leaf fan and come in peace.. Congrats on a good season so far! That Giroux is a great player!
Anyways, there are some rumors of Jeff Carter to Toronto and i was just wondering when you guys had both Carter and Lupul did they play together at some point?

Hartnell-Carter-Lupul was a line for almost the entire 08-09 season when Carter scored those 46 goals. At least, I think so. Hartnell went 30-30 and Lupul 25-25. It was another one of those lines that looks a little strange on paper, but worked out splendidly (Hartnell-Brière-Leino being another).
