I would agree, but at the same time he wouldn't be the first player to slightly alter his game upon realizing that the way he's played up through juniors won't work in the NHL. Not saying that will be the case, but I would rather have held onto him for one more season than getting someone like Ford.

Yeah, I'd have preferred a pick as well. Not that I think that teams were lining up to even offer a late round pick to get Marshall.

He might not have been big enough for the NHL. But as we all saw on HBO he's got some moves usefull when winning... Knock Knock!

I don't see the point of this deal, but I guess Holmgren has some reasons we don't know... anyway, I don't really care to be honest.

Matt Ford making 525,000 and is a UFA at the end of this season.

Marshall making 845,833. RFA at the end of this season. Also, it looks like this was the last year of his entry level contract. So he was probably going to need a raise.

So basically a move that would easily get rid of a contract at the end of the year?

We're not in a desperate situation to rid ourselves of contracts for the next season though. We have a whole bunch of upcoming UFAs.

Marshall also has some bonuses on his entry-level contract. If I remember the rules correctly, he'd need a 10% raise on 650k if he's given a qualifying offer.

From John Paddock:

We have an excess of D at the AHL level.

We want some other guys to see continued/additional ice time.

It was a convenience-for-convenience deal.

We have trouble scoring (at the AHL level) and the hope is he can produce at that level.

Yeah, I know, but the point was that he wouldn't need a raise from the 845k that is his current cap hit, but would rather have a lowered cap hit since he wouldn't have any bonuses on his next contract.

Anyway, I guess I can buy the reasons given in MSE's post. Manning, Kessel, Lauridsen need some ice time I suppose. Too bad we couldn't lure the Capitals to take Matt Walker instead...

This is Holmgren's way of confirming that his cell phone is working.

Not necessarily. Gus or MAB might be coming down soon if there is Gill or Allen on the way.

I don't really understand how anyone can get pissy at these moves. While Marshall was still young, he didn't have the size to play his game in the NHL. He got bullied quite easily off he puck here. Bourdon to his credit has that size and strength ( didn't someone say he was the strongest on the team?) and game has translated far better at the NHL level than the AHL level.

If we were to make a move for a defenseman it would leave us with

Bourdon
Walker
Bartulis
Laurdison
Kessel

I'm sure that they want to see Laurd in a more prominant role, and with us ditching Walker soon it allows the phantoms to have a pretty strong top 4.

If this get's Lauridsen more playing time, then I am all for it, I really think him and Kessel are the future of our non-NHL prospects at the moment. At the end of the day, a guy like Marshall is at best a career 6th defenseman it seems. And frankly, there is a glut of borderline young talent, and older, experienced type guys like Lilja and co. who can fill that 6/7th D need. So let's not get too bent out of shape losing a former 2nd round pick for a career AHL'er, when most of us, and guessing the management as well, didn't see a bonafide NHL'er.

What was the bet? I forgot.

Either way, this trade doesn't make any sense.

They must really love Lauridsen and Manning...

(Also you can't win bets when Holmgren does something stupid. Even I can't predict that.)
