my thoughts exactly. Could be another McCabe move where he only will waive to NY..........Wolski may have to go back to fit that salary though

I would be happy with Smyth as a rental

Not sure about Ryan Smyth. Where would we slot him? We really need a face-off guy.

Wolski for Smyth.

Probably won't work though.

Wristers are easier to deflect and they are more accurate from a shooters perspective.

Maybe wrist one wide of the net a little and let Smyth deflect it back on net?

Smyth can help the Rangers.

His 6 million will be tough to fit though.

I dunno its crazy get both?

Johnny Malkin cant possibly keep doing so well. EC /Wolski go first then Mitchell if they can get enough depth at the deadline

Also Smyth is not hard to fit if Wolski and his 3.8 is moved out which will happen via trade or waivers

Wolski, Christensen and a 3rd rounder would be ideal

LA could have gotten more for Smyth from Calgary but he wanted to be an Oiler. Something about Bleeding Oiler Blue. Sather knows Smyth very well. Knows his parents very well. He wants to finish his career in Edmonton but maybe he chooses to take a detour to NY joining Slats before concluding his career in Edmonton. Smyth controls the cards like McCabe did. It was Rangers or stay in FLA. McCabe wanted a longer term gig in NY but it didn't work. His wife is from LI and he has a home on LI. Smyth forced his trade from LA and he could tell Edmonton its NY or nothing if they want to rent him out for a few months and I'll be back in July.

Newport Sports leaked the Smyth story to Brooks to set parameters. Tells Sather that Smyth wants in and tells EDM he would waive for the Rangers.
All true. Not the perfect add because he is slow and this group of forwards already has issue with speedy teams.
Also true about MCCabe and he cost us a 3rd. Smyth far superior player to McCabe at this point so he is going to cost us a 2nd at a minimum despite his preference to come here.
Forget about Wolski and Zuccs as tradebale assets to a rebuilding team. They are both UFAs who have a combined zero goals this season..

Wolski + 3rd would be my best offer for Smyth. He's a good guy, but he's very specialized in what he does. Could we use a net presence on our PP? Yeah, but that's not going to fix all of our PP issues. If Slats is going to bring him in, it needs to be on the cheap.

Gomez had a lot of value going to Montreal in that trade...

That's why I said it probably wouldn't work, but if Bob Gainey gave us McD, then you never know.

Plus, Wolski has more skill in his pinky toe than Smyth does in his whole body.

I hear that Pajaarvi kid hasn't been doing so well. They should cut ties with him in a deal to NY.

Ehh dont know if that would get it done. Maybe a 2nd and/or a lower level prospect?

The two players that are realistic targets that intrigue me are Smyth and Whitney. I agree with you that Smyth is very specialized, but its the type of skills that could help. However, whats more pressing on the power play besides a body in front of the net is overall creativity - Whitney would help more in that regard.

well he was dealt for a 7 th and Fraser......of course he did force that deal.......so getting a 3rd back and taking a look at Wolski before he becomes a FA likely still puts the Oilers ahead.........of course we would all throw in EC too.

I could see that happening since Smyth likely is picky on where he goes and he will resign in Edmonton anyway

Yeah that's what I'm saying. I'm just not willing to go any higher for him. If our biggest need was a net front presence? Sure, I'd give up a 2nd and a toss-in prospect like Pashnin for him, but we're not at that point right now.

Unfortunately I don't think Phoenix is going to be selling this year. Whitney being off the table might drive up the interest on Hemsky for many teams though.

Does anyone think the Rangers would be interested in Semin?

He has a ton of pure skill, but is another inconsistent forward.

Could Torts set him straight?

The way he's played, he'd have trouble keeping up in the ECHL... Oil would never go for this.

Ryan Smyth would be ideal for this team. I don't think people are giving him enough credit for the style of game he plays and the leadership he provides.

If it is lining up that we are playing the Capitals again, I say we trade for Semin just to bench him and not let him fire lasers at Lundqvist for a 3rd year!

He's another player that would take a slapshot in the face to score a goal. I think he would step in and wouldn't miss a beat on how we play. The problem is he is slow, but him on the powerplay makes up for his speed, I'd think.
