wellman is a whalepacker at best he's not an upgrade on EC that's why we sent the 7th as well. this deal is to free up cap space bottom line good move by the cigar.

I don't know, maybe Henrik Lundqvist. lol

Never understood the extreme hate for him. Can't say I'm sad about trading our, what?, 14th forward? Good luck to him in Minnesota.

Right but there are two points there... the first is that Europe is better scouted now than even in 2002. The next is that if the Rangers really wanted a guy they would trade to get him. They traded Sanguinetti so they could grab Fasth, who was off everyone else's radar.

It's a beautiful day in Ranger land. EC is gone, and we are in 1st in the NHL.

We have $2 M in cap space right now (incl 9 defenseman). With this move and with Eminger coming back in ~ 10 days (thereby demoting Bickell to CT but he then has to go through waivers which might mean he could be dealt instead), we can in theory add the following pieces (cap space wise) to our roster:

Additions Deadline hit
Ryan Smyth 1.351.351
Vinny Prospal 540.541

One of:
Pavel Kubina 832.432
or
Cory Sarich 778.378

Another option on D would be:
Marek Zidlicky 864.865 (left at the deadline)
But he has 4M left on his contract one more year. Could maybe be dealt in the off season if things do not work out though...

Our trade chips would include:
Wojtech Wolski 821.622 left at deadline
Jeff Woywitka 140.541 left at deadline
Mats Zucarello Not on NYR roster
Sean Avery Probably max return would be the 7th (conditional) we lost in The Christ deal
Draft picks
Prospects

Just saying...

And Sauer remains on LTIR...

Could this mean a follow up deal?

We literally have no injury reserves now with Eminger out and the other two in Hartford...

Good luck to Crusher. Hope he can find a place somewhere.

Wellman is a quality pick-up for the Whale. Good wheels, good hands, but lacks strength. Not a bad reserve guy in the event someone is injured.

From what posters have been writing on the trade board, he sounds like a younger version of EC. Not physical. Not able to play in a bottom 6 role. Too inconsistent to play in a top 6 role. But he'll be a star in Hartford, which I'm sure was a large reason for the deal.

Don't understand the venom being spewed at EC on his way out.

I remember him being pursued by a lot of teams as an undrafted FA out of U-Mass. Late bloomer, played in the USHL until 20, played two years of college.

From what I've read, sounds like another Parenteau-type of player. Good offensive game, but he shys away from physical play. Game isn't suited for the bottom 6, but he's really not good enough to be in an NHL top 6 in most cases.

That said, I like the trade. I assume the conditional pick is tied to him playing games for us, so at the very least, we just gave Hartford a huge help, so I like this trade for us.

I sincerely wish him luck

Unfortunately (for him) this team was too good for him to have a real role...hopefully he's able to make a name for himself elsewhere

True. I guess I just don't really see the point in throwing in the 7th when the guy we are getting is actually worse than the one we're giving up. It's not like EC was such an expensive player that we had to throw in picks in exchange for a team to be willing to take on extra salary. But at the end of the day it's no biggie...a new 7th is easily obtainable if so desired.

We got a 24 year old player that could possibly still improve and become a regular NHLer. They got a 28 year old player who is an inconsistent, borderline NHLer who is unlikely to ever improve. And the pick is a conditional 7th in 2013, most likely on the condition that they re-sign EC.

Maybe he plays well there and they re-sign him? He played well enough for us after we claimed him on waivers that we gave him a 2 year deal, so it's not out of the question.

More importantly, Wellman is a PPG player in the AHL. The Whale need that!

Irony of Wellman deal: When Wellman was up during last stint, former #mnwild GM Doug Risebrough, now working for Slats, followed Wild around

The Rangers liked Wellman two years ago. They got their man.

Never loathed him. Frustrating player though, considering all the skill he has. Guy gave some great interviews too.

Good luck in Minny, Crusher.
