Yes.

He has held down the top pairing and could easily be there instead of Scuderi right now. Not O'Donnell's current status at all.

O'Donnell also won a Cup. If Willie's to take a discount, it'll be with a Detroit/Vancouver/Boston...not here.

Lol yes. No question.

This is not factoring in changes, either increases or decreases with the cap of course...
What kind of message would it send to other free agents who hit the market if we let Gagne go? Sign for one year and then see ya... Not a good management tactic.

A couple of things need to be kept in mind...
- Potential of cap shrinking
- Quick's upcoming salary cap hit (TBD, but will be a hefty raise)

Well, uh. It will tell them that if they sign a two year deal with a team, it might be over after two years? Don't really understand how that is a bad message. Quick's new cap hit would not take place next season, obviously. If you let Scuderi and Gagne go to free agency at the end of the year, you can sign him easily to anything around $6 million.

I guess I wasn't clear enough....

Is a 35-year-old Willie Mitchell really that much better than a 35-year-old Sean O'Donnell (i.e., Sean O'Donnell from 5 years ago)? The 2nd Law of Thermodynamics suggests that Willie will be slowing down sooner rather than later. If he has to pay higher than $2 or $2.5m, I don't think DL re-signs him.

Um, yes, he is. Willie will slow down but the gap between he and O'Donnell at that age is fairly large.

If the cap shrinks with the new CBA, there will be either a rollback or a way out of some contracts much like there was with this CBA. It will not be simply, "HA your screwed" to well over half the league that is sitting near the cap.

If you are talking based on the current CBA, I see absolutely no reason that the cap would shrink. US/CAN just went through a very large recession (still ongoing?) and the league is consistently showing near record gains. There is absolutely 0 reason to think the cap will shrink.

OD was 37 when he came back to LA and was never the fastest skater in his prime. Mitchel will be 35 in roughly 4 months.

Which is why I think Mitchell won't be a King next season.

Brad Stuart on the otherhand...

I wonder if this could add up to anything:

MTL pushes the panic button

Robitaille hounds DL to death about Louis LeBlanc

He's too prized by the organization and he is a natural center. Would cost too much and we would have no where to put him.

Brad Stuart is way less physical that Mitchell. I would rather keep Willie.

I, like virtually everyone else on the board besides you, believe that Willie Mitchell >>> to Sean O'Donnell, even if O'Donnell was five years younger. Keep in mind Mitchell's current salary isn't $3.5 million per year because we felt like being nice, it was set there by the market value. Other teams were after him at the time, Vancouver, us and I believe San Jose and Chicago as well. He got $3.5 million because that's what the market dictated. Considering Gleason's recent contract, I don't see any indication that his price will go down. He won't get a four year deal like Gleason, but a 1-2 year deal at $3.3-$4 million isn't at all unrelaistic.

$2 million per year is. As well, it is very rare to see a player resign with a team for a noticable pay cut, unless that player has a great deal of loyalty to the organization. Willie doesn't have that.

I still think people are going to be wrong in assuming Quick gets $6 million per year. Closer to $6.5 million annually looks more likely IMO.

Exactly.

As for the cap shrinking -- I'd put my bet on it rising. There was that TV deal. Plus, Canadian teams' profits have been a big part of the recent cap increases, and they're still going strong.
