I really didn't want Carter to the Leafs as I know he isn't a Leaf fan. But I've really started to warm up to the idea after finding out Lupul is good buddies with him and had great chemistry with him in Philly. Lupul-Carter-Kessel line would be pree decent. Doubt Burke wants that contract though.
Part of the reason that Philly chose to move Lupul in the trade to bring in Pronger was to break up the Carter Lupul Richards and (IIRC) Hartnell.
The only player left from that group now is Hartnell, so management clearly had serious issues with the behaviour of those guys. It was pretty public that Laviolette had issues with guys disregarding curfews and not abstaining from alcohol during the playoffs.
That's all heresay and speculation based on what was reported in the media, but some of it comes from the HBO special, so I have some faith in it.
As players get older they become wiser and that seems to have happened with Lupul and I wouldn't preclude it from happening to Carter, but I'm not involved with the situation directly so I couldn't say.
All I know is that if Carter in fact hates Toronto, it's highly unlikely Toronto would be negotiating to acquire him. I doubt Burke would make a serious trade like that without knowing the facts. Same with his attitude in the dressing room. If the Leafs thought it would be a problem, they'd likely keep their noses out of it.
I'm sure Burke would talk to Lupul and find out the scoop.
Point is, if the Leafs DO bring in Carter, I would trust that Burke had done his homework and not worry about whether Carter was going to be a locker room cancer or not.
Id love Carter on the leafs if the price was right. People make too big a deal about his contract, its a steal for a potential 40 goal scorer. And to those who say he wouldnt "fit in" on the top line beside lupul and kessel, he scored 46 goals in philly playing with lupul. Besides, lupul and kessel are both shoot first players and they still have great chemistry
I turn the channel anytime Dreger comes on TV. He's a PR *****. Doesn't get much right. I use to not mind him.
Yeah his credibility has taken some pretty big hits over the years. Now it's more to garner interest and ratings leading up to the trade deadline rather then the facts. He's fun to listen to, but you just can't put much stock into what you're hearing.
Who gives a crap if Carter isn't a play maker? Lupul and Kessel aren't play makers and that's not stopping them from having 30-40 goal seasons. Carter has already scored 40 once in his career and would be a good addition at a fair cap hit.
