Canucks recall F Byron Bitz from Chicago

No Higgins to start the trip:
VanCanucks Vancouver Canucks
Chris Higgins will not fly with the #Canucks to Colorado. He'll join the team during the trip when he feels better.
So Byron Bitz is the choice for a call-up - if he can make it:
JamiesonCanucks #Canucks Vigneault says Higgins won't travel with team, but may join on trip, team trying to call up Byron Bitz from the minors.

JamiesonCanucks #Canucks Weather conditions in Denver making flights hard to get for Bitz, said AV.

Been wondering what Bitz can bring for a while now. I know he's massive and can actually fight as well...maybe we can win a fight this season!

According to Gallagher the Canucks would likely have called up Steve Reinprecht as Gillis says he is the best player in the AHL at the moment but he would likely have been lost on re-entry waivers and the Canucks would have had to carry half his $2 million salary.
The good news for Vancouver is that they already have a skilled forward ready to join the team as soon as the season ends, assuming he stays healthy the rest of the way.

That fellow is NHL veteran Steve Reinprecht, who Canucks GM Mike Gillis described Thursday night as "the best player in the American League right now."

The club would cheerfully bring him up now as a replacement for any one of the passengers floating around up front, but he would almost certainly be claimed on recall waivers, and so, not surprisingly, they're going to wait until they can bring him up risk-free.

I can't remember when he got injured exactly, did he even play in camp? Regardless of whether he did or not I certainly haven't seen him play. He's played a bunch of NHL games though as I'm sure everyone knows so someone must know something!

That's interesting to hear about Reinprecht. It will be good to have him as playoff depth considering his past experience (two Finals trips, 1 Cup).

Don't get your hopes up about Bitz's fighting skills. He was schooled in some fight by some midget a few games ago.

Im still pumped to see him play though.

That's a lot of praise from MG about Reinprecht. Anyone watch enough Wolves' games to give some info on Reinprecht's play?

He will not be as waivers remain in force until the end of the Canucks playing season.

Once the rosters are frozen post-deadline and nearer the post-season, it is highly unlikely he would be claimed by another team as his contract expires on June 30, 2012 and he will be UFA.

Not until his contract expires. Though effectively he can be brought up after the trade deadline without much fear of a team picking him up. Anyone picked up on waivers after the deadline isn't eligible to play for that team until the next season.

Given that Reinprecht's contract ends this season, a team would basically be paying half his salary for him to sit at home. Not only would that be a waste of money, but it would be in very poor form to screw over a veteran player like Reinprecht who could potentially be playing for an NHL contract next season.

Interesting. I'd really like to see what Reinprecht can do for our fourth line. He's been really tearing it up in Chicago and has the kind of experience that we could use for a deep playoff run. If he can contribute it would be like picking up another trade deadline player without losing any assets.

That's a pretty good way of putting it, maybe THIS is MG's master plan.

Bitz is good too. Any player with an alliterative name is good in my book.

If Bitz can contribute too then that is even a bigger bonus.
Just shore up the defence and we should be set to go.

I wonder how well Bitz played while in Chicago?

By the looks of it Reinprecht is having a good year down there. 9 goal, 26 points in 28 games.

Gotta love an owner that will burry that in the minors for a good veteran 13th forward for the playoffs.

I remember watching Bitz when he played for the Saskatoon Contacts and then during his junior tenure with the Nanaimo Clippers. I have always been impressed with the kid's (does he still qualify as a kid) work ethic... one of the hardest working guys in hockey.

I know he's only a 4th liner with limited playoff experience and I'm trying not to set expectations too high... but I am legitimately excited.

I'm not going to pretend that was part of Gillis' plan. I think he, along with everyone else considered it a cost of acquiring Booth. That he seems to have a resurgence is a happy coincidence which should be great both for the prospects who get to play with him and for the playoffs.

This is a heavyweight that had trouble beating up Kyle freaking Chipchura.

About as useless as brad winchester.

Big and will serve as a good punching bag.
