Dreger: desperate Brian Burke to "take a run" at James Van Riemsdyk

Apparently this rumor has resurfaced.

Quote:
Desperate to Deal

TSN Hockey Insider Darren Dreger was on the NHL on TSN panel last night to discuss the Maple Leafs trade situation leading up to the deadline. Dreger said that Leafs GM Brian Burke is desperate to make a move and will take a run at Philadelphia Flyers forward James Van Riemsdyk.

Burke will have to offer more than just Schenn and assorted junk. It makes no sense for the Flyers to deal JVR at a discount rate. For the future, I still view him as the same player he was down the stretch and in the playoffs last year and fully expect him to return to similar form once he gets the surgery and recuperation he requires. If the Flyers share my opinion, Burke is unlikely to match Holmgren's asking price and that's fine with me because I am not very impressed with anything Toronto has to offer.

Give us Schenn and Kulemin and it's a done deal for me.

Personally, there is so much junk in that thread I like having a new thread for a legitimate rumor discussed by a somewhat legitimate source.

That is just me.

This isn't an "acquiring a defenseman" topic. This is about Burke's rumored interest in JVR.

And what, other than a defenseman, do you think Toronto would be offering for JVR?

To summarize: Toronto fans believe that the Flyers add to JVR to get Schenn; Flyers fans believe Toronto adds to Schenn to get JVR. Most neutral fans agree with the Flyers fans, but think the "+" is closer to a 2nd than the 1st that many Flyers fans want. Conversation descends into name-calling. Toronto fans conclude that they don't "need" JVR anyway; Flyers fans conclude that it would be better to keep JVR and target Suter. Everyone decides that both teams are better off without a Schenn-JVR trade.

There, with that out of the way, this thread can proceed, properly, as something other than a Schenn-JVR discussion.

Seriously, though. I don't see what Toronto could offer aside from a package around Schenn (or Gardiner, or Gunnarsson, or pick-another-defenseman) that would be appealing to us. It has to be about acquiring a defensman--that's where our needs lie, and that's where Toronto has assets to trade.

Not sure what they would want with him? IF he comes back, he doesn't have many years left in him.

Painful to say. But the truth.

Besides Shooting%, why was Kulemin so much better last year than this year? Quality of teammates, flash-in-the-pan, banged up?

I'm nuetral as a blues fan, but toronto would definatley need to add to Schenn to get JVR. I don't understand the luster behind Luke Schenn, he doesn't impress me in any facet of the game. On the other hand, once JVR pulls it all together which I don't doubt he will, he will be a force in this league. No reason for you guys to deal him for anything more than a significant upgrade...

I agree with you about Shenn ! The one thing about him and JVR is that i keep thinking that both of them will one day soon figure it all out and become the players many think they can become. But as it stands right now i do not think Shenn will do much to help solidify our Defense, and i rather wait on JVR to see what he accomplishes the rest of this season and in the playoffs....Now Shenns brother who we have now is starting to really impress me, he is looking like a real gamer !.....A part of me wonders if the Shenn in Toronto is sort of just going through the motions to get traded ? [ probably not, but the thought hits me from time to time.]

Take it easy, internet policeman.

Screw Toronto. The only way I'd trade JVR to the Leafs would never happen.

This is good if true. If he is as desperate as Dreger is making him out to be then maybe he'll overpay?

I don't want to trade JVR but if it was Schenn and Kadri, Franson, or Colborne I would do it.

I think that is the general consensus. If I'm Homer I'm not shopping JvR. But if people call to inquire and offer something of value, I think you take it if it helps the team.

IŽam not sure if its the right time to shop JVR.

He is injured all season long and plays 5 levels under his normal status. Maybe we should wait for him to bounce back to a normal form and than go shopping with him.

Agreed. I think if the offers too good to pass up, you should make the trade (if it improves the team also). The Leafs seem to be the desperate ones, so we should make sure to get the best possible offer.

We wont be able to make a 1 for 2 trade though, since we will be over the contract limit. We would have to throw in a AHL guy with JVR

If Burke actually is desperate to make a move I would assume that he is desperately trying to make the playoffs. How exactly does trading for a currently concussed player who has had a torn abdomen earlier this year, not to mention all the injury rumors surrounding his hip, help the Leafs accomplish that. Makes no sense to me.

I think moving JVR now would be a big mistake, given his current injury status and how it has effected his offensive production, they would be selling low. I say hold on to him unless they blow you out of the water with a massive overpayment.
