On this day in 1977 Ian Turnbull scores 5 goals in a game

The most for a defenseman and still holds the record today. He also scored those 5 goals on 5 shots.

i was very young at the time, i don't recall seeing this game, but i do remember watching Turnbull. Had a ton of heart. He would jump off the bench to the aid of a team mate at the drop of a hat.

that was a pairing

i remember seeing sittlers 10 pt game
but i dont remember seeing turnbull's 5 goal night, but hearing it on the radio next day

two other things of note:

the detroit goalie was carolina gm jim rutherford and, the red wings interim coach was larry wilson - none other than rotten ronnie's dad who is visible at the end of the video posted above

Yup....those were the hockey heroes of the day when I was a kid. Salming was an amazing player....I remember him well. I'm sure he would have won a Norris but he played in an era of great Dmen...Robinson,Savard,Orr,Potvin etc.....Turnbull was a great offensive defenseman I remember...a bit harder and less polished than Salming but a great compliment to the phenomanally gifted Swede. Best Leafs D pair in the last 40 years, IMO.
