Defence is Better than we Thought?

Despite being in the bottom 10 in GA, which to me isn't a big deal because they're less than 10 goals within being middle of the pack despite our goalie controversies. While we can't undo the past, if we took away the Boston blowouts, our GA would drop to close to the top 10 which is pretty good because the teams ahead play defensive hockey or have elite goalies. The past 13 games I believe, we have 6 shutouts, and PK has improved drastically that our GA is reducing as well. So do people feel comfortable with the defence we have. I'm sure guys like Franson, Gardiner, and Schenn will get better in time in the future, and we can have a fairly dominant top 6 group.

on paper they're a good group. they have been liable to make boneheaded plays which ultimately bites us in the ass, but maybe i'll give them the benefit of the doubt for being a relatively young group.

the captain has lead the charge and the rest are following. even Gunn's play has improved of late.

Our defensemen are good the system is not, but it either looks like Wilson has dialed back that Dmen run and gun or the dmen seem to be doing it smarter. Before it seemed like they made bad pinches and rushes all the time, now they are picking them and I like it.

Tonight is a perfect example of how the dmen should be playing... in the defensive zone, push them to the outside and let them take those bad shots and in the offensive zone, they seem to be much more aware, Schenns goal was a perfect example, great pinch by him.

50 shots against is a good defence? Must be a new system I'm unaware of. :-/

I think Gardiner has been the largest improvement lately, man he is awesome out there.

We have a really good defense on paper, we are just starting to see the results on the ice.

As much as I hate RW, he deserves some credit for making the team for more organized in all three zones, which has allowed us to control the play and have a better overall defense.

All the shots were from the outside and point shots. Can't recall Senators have any grade A chances.

He's so calm out there. The way he walked that line on the Frason goal, that would have been a clear cut break if he was stripped, but he just leaned in and dished it down to Franson for that goal to happen.

I will never understand why people continue to eliminate things in the past just because it does not work in their favour. Case in point, the Boston games.

It makes no sense, logically, and provides absolutely no justification towards the agenda trying to be proven.

What people forget is were a young rebuilding squad. We look good on paper but it takes time and patience to see it through.

Yea, I am excited to see what he will be able to do with an off season to improve.

I have often wondered if Burke or the scouts thought he would be this good.

Point is, regardless of whether you think the quality was low, against a good team, that would be a different story. Obviously, they were hemmed in their own zone too long on one too many occasions. But, oh well....

The Team Gave Up 49 Shots Tonight, Each That Reimer Saved.
The Leaf Defence Is Poor. Maybe Goaltending

The only weakness this team has shown defensively this year is on the pk.

The defense is better than we thought because we haven't let in a goal in two games. Once we lose a game everyone will again resort to "This guy's a piece of ****! I've had enough of Burke! How much longer do we have to watch him overpay for these overrated defenseman!? **** this team!"

All were perimeter shots.. he didn't save very many good shots, and if he made a save and the rebound was loose, the Leafs stepped on it right away.

Defense and goaltending have been improving steadily. Leafs are right behind the top four as far as ROW wins go and only one of five teams to have a positive differential in the East.

We need to go like 14-12-4 to make the playoffs, honestly, we don't really need a "big" trade this year, a few minor tweaks might do the trick.

There will be blips, and the bi-polar aspect of the Nation, will rear its
ugly irrational head.

I hope there will only be blips, and this is the true fashion of play of TML.

Maybe because we believe a few isolated games against the reigning Stanley Cup champions is indicative of who we are as a team?

Against Boston we are:
0-4-0 6GF & 23GA

Against the rest of the league we are:
27-15-6 155GF & 129GA

Do you really not see the wide discrepancy between these? Against Boston we have the tendency to perform like an AHL squad often looking nothing like the speedy, resilient, offensively dangerous club we have entrenched ourselves as. Against the rest of the NHL we arguably perform like an an elite team and a legitimate playoff threat with our overwhelming speed and depth.

Considering we have only had two blowout losses the entire season -- both at the hands of the Bostonians, I think it's fair to dismiss those games as an anomaly when judging our teams performance rather than taking that small sample size against one dominant team as the norm.
