RMC vs. Army Hockey Game Back On!

http://everitas.rmcclub.ca/?p=56990

This is awesome news. The series stopped in 2006 because of schedule conflicts between Divison 1 hockey and the OUA season. But these games are nuts. If the game is played at Westpoint, you have to deal with the Army cadets AND the NCAA officials. One year in Kingston they got NHL referees and they let the play go a lot. A lot of fights but Greg Kimmerly was the referee and just called 4 minutes for roughing each. And it always packs the house at either arena.

That's great! Always nice to see a cherished hockey tradition being brought back. Would be great if these games were televised.

maybe, maybe not. RMC has been bad in the past but just play out of their minds in this game and can beat the better Army team. If you watch the game, you'll understand

My concern is that RMC is one of the worst CIS teams while Army is usually ranked in the top 20 in NCAA.

Army is very rarely in the top 20. Air Force has been, but I can't remember the last time Army was in the top 20. Maybe in the 90's??

Here is a little history of the game:

The West Point series originated when the commandant of RMC, Sir Archibald McDonnell and the superintendent of the United States Military Academy (West Point), Brigadier General Douglas MacArthur, suggested a game of hockey between the two schools in 1921. After two years of exchanging ideas the first game was played on February 23, 1923 at West Point. [5] The Redmen won that first game 3-0 and a New York paper stated "Army was beaten at hockey today by Royal Military College of Kingston, Ontario. The Canadian cadets excelled the Army men all the way, displaying the best all around form seen here in years. Hamilton and the Carr- Harris’s were the outstanding stars of the Canadian team. This game was one of the cleanest fought contests staged here this winter and was marked by a fine display of sportsmanship on both sides." In commemorate of the game, RMC donated the "Challenge Trophy."
In 1924 the series moved to Kingston thus beginning the tradition of rotating venues. This was Army's first away game and up until 1941 the West Point Game was the only time that Army played away from the Academy.
From 1923-1935 RMC ran up a record of 14-0-1. The only blemish being a 4-4 tie in 1935. 1939 saw Army win its first game 3-1. As a result of WWII only one game was played, at 3-1 Army win in 1942, over the next 10 years.
In the 50's and 60's Army won 15 of 20 games bringing the series close with RMC holding a 21-18-1 advantage. Throughout the 70's and 80's the teams played fairly closely. In 1986 the record stood at 26-25-4 in favour of RMC.
Over the last 15 years Army has dominated going unbeaten from 1988-1999. RMC last won in 2002 by a score of 3-0 and Army won in 2004 3-2.
The 2003 game featured a 4-0 Army win at West Point. RMC was shut out for the first time since 1996 while being short handed 12 times during the game.
The 2006 game was a 3-3 tie in front of 3100 fans in Kingston. Currently Army leads the Series 39-29-7.
The 2007 edition of the rivalry was to take place on Saturday 10 Feb, at Tate Arena in West Point, New York, but was cancelled due to regular season scheduling conflicts.
For 2008 the teams will not play a competitive game but instead the Paladins will travel to New York to spend 3 days practicing, playing and socializing with the West Point cadets. [6]
This series, conceived in 1923, is the longest running annual international sporting event in the world

CBC, TSN, or Sportsnet should pick up the broadcast of this game. It could be a great event. I am sure Don Cherry would even show up to give the armed forces a thumbs up.

Today is gameday for RMC/Army. Both teams are excited as is the alumni. RMC chartered a few buses (including the band) at 7am for the game tonite. Should be a zoo at Tate Rink

I believe that's about right.

Frankly, I was quite surprised that Army beat RMC as badly as they did because the Black Knights have had a ton of injuries this season. In their series with Air Force last weekend, they were missing four of their top guys.

But it's good to see the rivalry renewed. It would also be nice to see the games alternate at each team's home rink each year. Maybe RMC could host it next year since Army did this year.

Not surprised at all. The teams are just at too different levels. Not sure this is a tradition that RMC will want to pursue.

it is a tradition we will want to pursue. We have a younger core and we got lost in the moment. We dominated the 2nd period but more Army goals were mental errors by us (bad pinch, missing guys on backcheck) We outhit them badly and were even on faceoffs. But much worse RMC teams than us have beaten better Army teams.

There is much more to it than who wins and loses, traditions are huge at places like RMC and West Point. When I saw them (army) play Air Force a few weeks ago, I noticed the physical side was missing from their play, as was systematic tight defence, consequently it appeared faster. But anyway, did everybody have a good time? I'd have loved to have been there.

Yeah we had a great time. Friday we took at tour of the campus including their athletic facilites and their parade square and their mess hall. Had a really nice dinner with some guest speakers. Guys loved the huge crowd with the dueling bands. The US Cadets really enjoyed the bagpipes we brought down. We just took a huge nap the latter half of the 2nd and paid for it, as any teams would in a big game like that.
