Callahan is our best defensive forward. When it comes to balancing offense and defense, Step is our best player. Although you could argue Callahan is our best two way forward, because while he lacks Stepan's offensive skill, he makes up for it in his defensive skill. They cancel each other out.

For this season, he's right up there with Callahan.

These two are our clear cut best two-way forward.

Completely disagree. I think Callahan's been our best overall forward this year.

I'm not talking about point totals and all that stuff. Stepan clearly has more skill than Callahan and is centering the 1st line as a 21 year old.

I would think that...

Stepan's offense > Callahan's offense
Callahan's defense > Stepan's defense

but Callahan has finished on more plays so I have to give him the nod as our best 2-way forward. Callahan is 10x more likely to get the Selke nod/nom over Stepan atm.

edit: i wouldn't put too much bank on +/- I'd give Callahan's blocked shots and hits stats more weight. plus he's a superior forechecker too.

edit2: good stuff that we are debating if Stepan's 2-way game can compare with Callahan's. a sign of Stepan's growth.

It's debatable. He's clearly a good two way forward. His offensive game is superior to most of the players on the team. His defensive game is much improved compared to his game last season. He might be a year from being the best two way forward on the team, but he clearly has good enough of a two way game to warrant both top powerplay and penalty kill time.

Callahan's play & contributions in the defensive zone stand out to me, more than any other forward on the team. Stepan may have better situational awareness on the ice, but Callahan's board work, battle level, and shot-blocking give him a significant edge in the defensive zone. I think Stepan projects to be one of the best 2-way forwards on the team, but at this time, I think he's got work to do.

I'd say him and Cally are even in terms of two-way play. Although Step's offense is better than Cally's, Cally's defense is better than Step's.

I think Callahan is still the team's best two way forward. He's always on the ice in the final minutes of a game when the team is protecting the lead and I can't say the same for Steps, although he is the more skilled player.

One complaint I do have with Cally this year is that he is more undisciplined than he has been in past seasons. He has already surpassed his career high in minor penalties this year. He is our best PKer so it puts us at more of a disadvantage when he takes a penalty.

The fact that Stepan is +22 and Cally is +3 and the Stepan/Gabby, Richards/Cally combos have the same amount of goals. I have to go with Stepan. He is now 11th overall in the NHL at +22.

I think Cally playing with Richards brings down his +/- a bit. Richards has a knack for making some stupid defensive plays once in a while. Although, Callahan has never really been a huge plus player. Neither was Drury though and he was considered to be one of the best two way players at some point

Stepan's defense is underrated though. He's very solid

Can you really consider a center a top two-way player when they are at about 45% on faceoffs?

When a 21 year old leads his team in assists, and has the highest +/- for a forward, then yes, you can.

When steps gets his man strength in a few years he'll be a two-way superstar.

It's Callahan right now, offensively and defensively.

Another year or two, and that can change BIG time

Stepan's faceoff % is much better than last year though. I think he was 38 or 39%--so that's improving.

Callahan is really the go to forward on the team in just about every respect though.

Gabby. Underrated defense, clearly superior offense.

I know this board is down on him right now but anisimov has been one of this teams best defensive forwards for a while...especially in the neutral zone and on the back check

Which is why his current doghouse status is plain retarded. Stepan, Cally clearly better but Artie on his own is 100% a great player for us to have and to hold going forward...till death do us part (couldnt resist)
