The other question that needs to be asked if you want the habs to use their waiver priority on Stewart.

Yup I just wasn't sure so I checked just before reading your reply..

Can a team that picked up a player on waivers loan/trade that player in the same season?

If Team A waives a player, and then Team B successfully claims that player, Team B needs to offer the player to all teams that put claims in for that player when Team A waived that player (note: they aren’t offering to trade the player… they’re offering to give the player up). This rule only exists for the current season that the player was claimed (up until the termination of playoffs for that season).

Would we have given Desharnais an opportunity if we kept Grabovski (and somehow developed him properly)? We technically signed him after/around the Grabovski trade.

We signed Desharnais after the 06-07 season, the season Grabs just got a spot on the team.

And if we had Grabs coming into his own after 08-09, I doubt we'd trade for Gomez.

MONTREAL -- Canadiens General Manager Bob Gainey announced Wednesday the signing of forward David Desharnais to a two-year, two-way contract (2008-09 to 2009-10). As per club policy, financial terms of the agreement were not disclosed.
He wasn't officially Habs property until 2008.

Well he was in the system after 07. I'm sure they would've officially signed him after his time in Cinci. I don't really see the correlation.

They still didn't sign him until Grabovski was out of their system. Desharnais = center, Grabovski = center. Let's say hypothetically we had Grabovski and he's playing as well as he is now, would there ever be room for Desharnais? It's a butterfly effect...there can be things we lose out on as well (ie. Desharnais being given a top 6 role and him developing).

Desharnais still had 2 seasons in the A before he got a long stint here. No team keeps their farm dry because they have young players on the team.

Hence, Grabs playing on the team = irrelevant to Desharnais signing. Of course, he might not get on the team as he did, but I very much doubt he'd be a complete miss due to Grabs playing.

Remember guys, Grabovsky was disruptive and had to be shipped out!!! All these "disruptive" players. I get the feeling that the players were never the issue to begin with.

Exactly the reason they will pick a dman and not a forward.

Well we could probably swap picks with them if we are willing to give up Subban or something. They need defense badly.

But that would be idiotic on our part.

Obviously we will never know but you can't say anything for sure. It's fun to just assume that if player A was still on the team we'd be so much better, but it is never as simple as plugging him into the lineup. Desharnais is just an example. It isn't unreasonable to say that Desharnais would not have made the Habs or given nearly as much icetime with Plekanec, Grabovski, Gomez/Koivu, Lapierre, etc etc ahead of him. It isn't unreasonable to say he could have been forced to succeed on a different team...thereby causing another 'we should have kept him' player. Grabovski was given ample icetime on the Leafs similar to what Desharnais is getting this year. This isn't Sergei Kostitsyn or Latendresse who both showed flashes of their ability as NHLers on the team. You have to give the Leafs credit on how they brought him up. A lot of luck/injuries/trades would have had to occur for us to have both Desharnais and Grabovski playing at their current levels. Odds which I wouldn't take.

All the more reason why edmonton will pick a D this year. They are almost obligated no matter where they are picking from

Grabovski had the third highest point/minutes (with no PP time) after he was recalled from Hamilton on the deadline in 08. He showed potential here, Carbs just thought scratching him for Dandy in Phoenix was a good idea.

The point of my comment wasn't so much that if we had him, we'd be so much better. It's more like we had him, traded him for essentially half a year of Lang, pretty much because the coach didn't like him. It just sucks.

Calgary down 2-0 with 1 min left in the first. Good for us, bad for them.
