How many shutdown defensemen do you think are in the NHL?

I find it a lot easier to list potential 30-35 goal scorers then shutdown defenders.

I feel Schenn is the more rare talent as far as his ceiling goes.

It's a fair point. Both are talented young players that have battled inconsistency.

It's a tough call, and I don't think many on this board can accurately assess JvR's value. After all, he's the consolation prize for our endurance of TYTSNBN. If the JvR-for-Schenn deal went down, I'd be cautiously optimistic, especially as the Flyers have a glut of high-end, young forward talent. However, I'd be far from disappointed if the deal never happened.

JVR for Schenn and Colborne i'd do it we all know what Schenn brings what we need and Colbourne is a big young first round pick do it homer..

We'd probably have to sweeten the deal to do that. It would probably mean MAB, Gus, or even a 2nd + minor prospect.

JVR, Wellwood/MAB, 2nd for Schenn and Colborne?

I would do JVR and Wellwood+a 2nd for Schenn and Colborne or JVR and MAB for the same (in a second) I think JVR's value is a bit higher than Schenn's but the Flyers need a defenseman so badly. Also I think JVR plays so soft and he won't do much in Toronto.

The flyers don't miss with first round forwards, even late ones. They could probably draft a JVR replacement in a few years.

MCKENZIE: REAL CHANCE THAT LEAFS MAKE NO SIGNIFICANT MOVES

Quote:
Three weeks to the deadline, and Toronto Maple Leaf fans will hate to hear this but there is a very real chance the team doesn’t make a significant move between now and the trade deadline.

Of course, things can change at a moment’s notice but the Leafs’ wish list is very specific, they want a top six forward with size who can score.

And there just aren’t too many of them floating around right now.

James van Riemsdyk has a concussion, he’s not a factor for the Leafs at this point.

Jeff Carter has a contract that Leaf GM Brian Burke would have difficulty taking on, especially when the Leaf GM has been so vocal against those long-term deals with the bogus years at the end.

Yeah, there's no way JVR's going anywhere when he hasn't even had a full practice yet.

It's sad to say, but if that concussion never happened, his bags would probably be packed already. And he knows it.

If this concussion stopped any trade chatter with JVR, it might just be one of the biggest breaks the Flyers could have gotten. It would be awesome if next year when JVR is completely healthy again to come back and dominate like he did in the playoffs last year. No one will be complaining about him then, and he still has plenty of time to develop into a premier power forward.

It's very possible that if he doesn't return soon, that he will stay put.

And that's not a bad thing by any stretch.

I don't think people just want to trade JvR-I guess I should say that I hope people don't just want to trade JvR-I think that they understand to get talent, you have to trade it sometimes.

I don't think that's true. There have been inquirires and speculation, but no reports of the Flyers putting JVR on the block.

Shortly after, James van Riemsdyk suffered a concussion, seemingly ending any speculation that he would be traded. While most people moved on and considered this potential deal over and done with, I decided to do more digging. After checking with sources, it started to become clear to me that the concussion JvR suffered may not have been as bad as initially reported, and one source even went on to say that this was a “smoke screen” of sorts, to deflect the attention away from the rumors.

About a week or so later, I reported that Brian Burke was waiting on medical reports on JvR before deciding whether or not to move forward with the deal, or to cut off talks completely. Well, it didn’t take too long for the reports to come back (about 3-4 days to be exact), and one of my sources informed me that the reports came back “good” and that Burke was told to “go ahead and take a chance” on Reemer.
Hmmm.

I thought the exact same thing when I read that. If the deal was a go, wouldn't it have happened already then?

Edit: Read the rest of the article... I take Bobby Mac's word over this guys opinion but interesting nonetheless.

Plus, the concussion is supposedly only one of JvR's health issues right now.
