Alfie MUST be MVP

Seriously..this injury just reconfirms the importance of him to this team. I am sure others would have been saying "ottawa is so good, they would win without him", well this just proves that ALFIE is the league MVP to me. He makes us a contender....without him, we seem quite average. IMHO The man never takes a night, or even a shift off....this is what leaders do, they perform.

Take Jagr off the Rangers and see what happens.

Alfie should be in consideration but he's not a lock by any stretch.

There's a thread on this on the NHL Board.

I switched my mid-season MVP vote from Jagr to Alfredsson about 2 minutes into last night's game

Seriously, I think a lot of the Rangers success can be attributed to the change in attitude team-wise, from top to bottom. They've got a lot more commitment to defense out of their forward corps, they finally have some good goaltending, and a lot of rookies have come out of nowhere and played way over their heads (Prucha and Malik in addition to Lundquist, of course). I'm not saying they'd be just as good without Jagr, but he's not the whole reason for their turnaround. I'd be curious to see what happens if he does miss a few games with the Rangers. How would they respond?

The Sens are a completely different team with Alfredsson in the lineup, as they showed last night. Granted, that can't have been of Phoenix's better games, what with all the turnovers, but he's a guy who can play in all situations and brings a physical edge to his game.

If you consider that the Hart is supposed to go to the player "most valuable to his team" I would say the race is very close between those two.

Well, we haven't seen the Rangers without Jagr, so it's hard to say.

He does have 65 points on their 133 goals, which means he's in on 49 % of their offense.

Alfie has 59 points on 174 goals, which corresponds to 34 % of Ottawa's offense.
When taking injuries into account, he has 59 points on 165 goals, which corresponds to 36 %.

I will say that I think Alfie has a larger skill set at this point in his career and wouldn't trade him for just about anyone.

I don't think Alfie is the whole reason for our team's evolution either. I think the man behind the iron mask has a lot to do with that as well. You wouldn't see as many risky offensive plays if that were Lalime in net right now.

True enough. I think the coaching change here has played a big part, as well as his more talented linemates (no more Todd White).

As you can see, I haven't fully convinced myself of this theory yet, either Joe Thornton is probably the 3rd guy in the debate, considering how he's lifted the play of his San Jose linemates.

Going to be an interesting Hart vote this year!

Take Kipper off the Flames and they wouldn't even be close to the playoffs.

I thought Calgary had the best defensive corps in the league.

I just cant imagine jagr winning........how can you award him the MVP when he get 11 MILLION from washington and then basically tanks soooooo bad that he gets traded. I cant stand awarding people that choose when to try and when not to try. heck, lets give yashin the hart one day.........

Alfie may not win the Hart.

But I would have to say he is probably the best all-around player in the NHL right now.

erm...hockey awards have to do with the season they are given in, not past seasons. It doesn't matter what Jagr did in Washington or what he did in NYR last season.

I'd say Jagr, Kipper, Kovalchuck (where would they be without him?) would all come before Alfie.

The people I consider in the same class Forsberg, Thronton (assuming he keeps it up, he's changed that whole team) Vokoun and of course Wade Belak.

Alfie is amazing but i don't think he'll win to much and the only reason is becasue the team is stacked. Without question, the best team in the league, if they don't win a cup, it will be a disappointment. He sometimes gets overlooked or at least not as much attention b/c of Hasek, Spezza, Havlat and Heatley. The sens have too many good players to single one out, unless he stands out head and shoulders above the rest. ie Gretzky on the Oilers and Alfie with all do respect, is no Gretzky although the Sens are the current Oilers.

Let me start by saying that I would not trade Alfredsson any other plauyer in the NHL right now. Not Thornton, Kovalchuk, Forsberg, Iginla, or anyone else for that matter. Alfie is the MVP on the best team in the league, but if he's not there niether is the team. He is the engine that drives the sens. If you watch any sens games you'll notice that whenever Alfie is on the ice the energy level goes way up, and the pace of the game changes.

Doing some number crunching all the forwards you mentioned (added Stall as he has been talked about as a MVp candidate) are pretty similar save a few stats +/- and SH TOI.

Going into tonights action. Take it for what' it's worth.
