Healthy Lineup?

With Bochenski coming back tonight it appears as though we soon could be back to a full healthy lineup (knock on wood) - hopefully Spezza is able to return Saturday in Edmonton.

Once Spezza comes back, do you think the Sens will:

(a) Send a player back to Binghamton?
(b) If so, who? Eaves? Bochenski? McGrattan?
(c) Carry an extra forward for the rest of the season?
(d) Make a trade to solve the problem?

I honestly can't see the Senators sending Eaves back to the minors anytime soon. He's been very impressive of late and seems to fit in on the 3rd line on this team very nicely. Is it time for McGrattan to return to Bingo? I say no, especially with 2 games against the Leafs coming up.

So, I think it's possible that Bochenski gets returned to Binghamton for the short-term, and perhaps longer if we acquire a forward for a draft pick or something like that. Any thoughts?

From today's update, it sounds as if Spezza is no closer to returning for the forseeable future.

Even if they came back tonight, i couldn't see the sens sending bochenski down. if he had been healthy when spezza and alfie were out he probably would have been the goal scorer in their absence. i think he's earned the right to stick around for a while.

This is what I 'hope' to see tonight:

Heatley - Smolinski - Alfredsson
Schaefer - Fisher - Bochenski
Eaves - Kelly - Neil
Varada - Vermette - McGrattan

D pairings as usual.

When Spezza gets back it'll be a choice between 3 players: Eaves, Bochenski, and McGrattan.

My preference is sit McGrattan but keep him on the roster for the games you need some added toughness as Neil can still take care of the enforcing for the team on most nights.

Heading into the Playoffs this is what i hope our lineup looks like.

Heatley - Spezza - Alfredsson
Fisher - Weight - Bochenski
Schaefer - Smolinski - Havlat
Varada/Vermette - Kelly - Neil

Now that's a line-up!

I like it! I our playoff lineup will look like:

Heatley-Spezza-Alfredsson
Smolinski-Weight/Jokinen-Havlat
Schaefer-Fisher-Neil (for some reason, I don't see that line being broken up)
Varada-Kelly-Eaves

I think Vermette or Bochenski gets moved as part of the Weight/Jokinen acquisition. As I wrote yesterday, I would move Smoke for a Martin Lapointe (sorry NyQuil) or someone of that ilk (Roberts?) if it were possible, but I suspect that won't happen. We could also add a 5/6 d-man to put Pothier in the press box for the playoffs. Either lineup would make us a strong contender for the Cup!

The tough part is splitting up either Schaefer-Fisher-Neil or Varada-Kelly-Eaves (or both), both of which have shown some chemistry recently.

I'd almost be inclined to try out Bochenski-Kelly-Eaves (or Eaves-Kelly-Bochenski) because I think Kelly is responsible enough defensively to keep a handle on the two rookies, and the Schaefer line would stay the same.

You could also see something like: Varada-Kelly-Bochenski and Eaves-Vermette-McGrattan.

Lots of permutations. Tough to call

Here I'd be inclined to move Fisher to the centre position and Smolinski to the wing.

Fisher is much more effective as a centre, whereas Smolinski can play wing or centre fairly interchangeably.

Our team gets bigger each year even when we dump a whole bunch of players. Even without picking up a player there does not seem to be enough room for two of Gratts, Bochenski or Vermette. Too bad the NHL isn't a fantasy league or we could trade the latter two for a better player their age.

I like it but I would have Havlat with Weight - Isn't the point of getting Weight to make a huge 2nd line? Move Boch down to the line with Smoke or even Kelly. Plus there is no way Eaves is not on this team in the playoffs - He is better than Varada and Vermette.

Heatley - Spezza - Alfredsson
Fisher - Weight - Havlat
Schaefer - Smolinski - Neil
Eaves - Kelly - Bochenski

Those would be huge lines - Even the 4th line could do serious damage if they were playing against the other teams weaker lines. To get Weight you probably give up Vermette.

Without a trade:

Heatley - Spezza - Alfredsson
Schaefer - Fisher - Havlat
Neil - Smolinski - Bochenski
Eaves - Kelly - Varada or Vermette

Still 4 great lines

How about we stop putting Weight in our lineups.

At best, it's a silly exercise since he's not on the team, and judging by 50 - 60 % of other playoff bound teams' boards, he's a lock for their teams as well.

At worst, we're jinxing him from coming here!

If we don't get Weight (which WILL happen damnit!), here's the playoffs:

Heatley - Spezza - Alfie
Schaefer - Fisher - Havlat
Bochenski - Smolinski - Neil
Varada/Vermette - Kelly - Eaves

If we DO get Weight:

Heatley - Spezza - Alfie
Smolinski - Weight - Havlat
Schaefer - Fisher - Neil
Varada/Vermette - Kelly - Eaves/Bochenski

Smoke as our 2nd line LW?

We have bigger problems on LW than we do at Center I think....

Smolinski needs to be traded for a 2nd line LW as far as I'm concerned.

Smolinski has filled in pretty well as the #1 center. I think he'd be fine as the #2 left winger.

I am with Nyquil on this, smoke has been pretty valuable during these injuries. He's filled in on the top line admirably and has shown good versatility. He's exactly the kind of guy I want around for the playoffs if someone gets hurt. When everyone is healthy I think he is a 2nd line winger or a third line centre, but he provides needed insurance for a legit contender.

(not that I don't want Weight)

IMO we don't really need to acquire anyone for the playoffs. With Schubert we have 7 high quality defencemen, and our forward core with the return of Havlat is exceptional. Here's how I see the lineup come playoff time:

Heatley-Spezza-Alfie
Vermette-Smolinski-Havlat(Vermette was showing good chemistry b4 Havlat's injury)
Schaefer-Fisher-Neil
Varada-Kelly-Eaves(this line has been exceptional)

With McGrattan and Bochenski in the lineup when necessary.

IMO Vermette has to show that he can put up good points in the next while so that he doesn't get traded in the near future. If he can get 20 goals this year that would be a good starting point. Also he needs some quality icetime, as he plays alot on the PK, but not much even strength and none on the PP lately.
