this happens all the time in NCAA basketball and it has never stopped anyone from disputing the legitimacy of the winners..
until the NCAA gets a true football playoff system, this is as good as it gets, and in most years it actually does pit the two best teams against each other, which is light years better than the old bowl system
because there is a tournement, or playoff. at the very very least, a plus one needs to happen. I would say a conference winner should not be eligible to win a national championship in football, without a tournament
There really needs to be a 8 or 16 team playoff but Presidents won't sign off on it. It could still work with bowls in the mix. Why not have the bowl season start off the beginning of the year with marquee games? These bowl locations would be much better to visit in Sept. than in Dec or Jan. The cities impacted by the bowls can have their tourism money still come in. Save the Big 4 for the Semifinals(Rose, Sugar, Orange, Fiesta). Otherwise the higher seed gets the home advantage. It could easliy work....but big money will stop it from happening....Presidents saying that kids would miss so much school is insane and a cop out. College Football does deserve a playoff....every other sport on earth has playoff's.

Pats v giants either Brady gets his 4th ring or Payton is looking up at Eli's shadow and his 3 rings
Eli only has one ring... and he got it against this team.
It's a TV advertiser's dream; two of the biggest sports towns in the country, two markets that absolutely hate each other, and a rematch of Super Bowl XLII. I think the Giants are the more complete team, but we'll see how they handle New England's offense.
A really dramatic pair of games tonight, though, will make this Super Bowl seem relatively weak by comparison, most likely.

Peyton will look up at Eli in much the same way that Marino looks up at Dilfer. The complete inability of the typical sports fan to divorce the player from the team around him is, in my opinion, one of the premier arguments that sports followers are fanatics and not just passionate observers.

So what do you guys think of Memphis joining the Big East?
East of Jackson, virtually nobody cares about Memphis. It might as well be on another planet.
I think it's a good move for the school, though. It'll give them a little extra oomph in football recruiting (which they desperately need) and should help their already-strong soccer and basketball programs.

Memphis is pretty irrelevant to people in Nashville. Well, to pretty much anyone anywhere who doesn't worship Elvis. I considered going to that school but couldn't shake that consistent ominous and depressed feeling I got when I was there. Anyways, I guess it's a good move. Anything is better than Conference USA but yeah they're a huge joke in football and are losing their prestige in basketball. I don't know if they're planning to update the stadium but I hope they are because it's an embarrassment. I feel sorry for whoever "gets to play" in the Liberty Bowl every year.
From a basketball standpoint it'll be interesting to see how they fare year in and year out in a really steady conference. In football, I wouldn't expect to hear about them any more than we do now.
My Kentucky Wildcats will be invading Nashville Saturday! Too bad I can't afford to get in this year. I knew I should've bought Vandy season tickets just for this one game like a lot of other Cats fans do.
****ing tickets the other night were a whopping $10 but when UK comes to town, $200 won't get you in the door.
