ThirdManIn didn't make one of these today, so I'm hijacking his spot
As a current local high school player, I'm curious as to what extent everyone here watches or participated in Greater Nashville Area Scholastic Hockey (GNASH, the local high school league) or other hockey rec leagues. To people who grew up here, do you still follow your alma mater? To the older folks, do your kids play? How familiar and involved are posters here with the rapidly growing youth hockey movement in Nashville?
I've been coaching youth hockey for 6+ years at AGame. My son will start high school next year so I'll be attending Franklin High games pretty regular. Been to a couple this year as well.
does centennial still have an A and B team? always sucked play either of their teams.
FHS/Brentwood was always a good game. there was like a 7 to 6 game my senior year where FHS scored like 4 or 5 in the thrd. it was mayham.
Yes, they do.
FHS has gone downhill badly. Lost in the championship of the lower division last year, moved up to the upper division and haven't won a game this year. Brentwood and Ravenwood are running away with it.

Was an assistant coach for a few years on a GNASH team. That was the first time I ever took up coaching. It was an interesting experience. It was a decent experience but I didn't enjoy it enough to continue long term. I think if I did get back into coaching I would enjoy coaching younger age kids. At the high school level there was always a kid or two or three or four that had the rebellious teenage attitude I didn't enjoy dealing with.
Also play for fun in the beer leagues. Beer+Hanging with the Boys+Hockey makes for a good time.
I have been around grassroots hockey in Middle TN since around 2005 and the popularity at the level is night and day today than where it was 7 years ago.
Is anyone playing in the Adult A or B league in Nashville? My friends are trying to get a summer team together but last year were rejected because the league was full.

Have never atttempted to play A league nor would I. I did play on with some teams with guys that are good A league players.

Yeah when I played A-league it wasn't very balanced...sure there were some pretty good teams but there was always some Coyotes team that was head and shoulders over everyone else.
Hope to see some of you guys this summer
I graduated high school in 2003. I went to Mt. Juliet and we were freakin awesome back then. My friend and I started getting students to come out and watch the games back when only parents were going (2002) and it blew up quickly. MJ and Centennial had a big rivalry back then and whenever MJ played Centennial, Page or Brentwood the places were packed. My friend and I like to say that we started the movement of students across Nashville going out to support, because before us there was no one, and then all that changed once we got a reputation of being loud and noisy, so other schools would try and out-do us, and the cycle was in effect.
I don't follow it anymore, but my senior year when MJ went 26-1 and won state easily was an awesome year. Great memories.
Also, I don't know if this is still a rule, but if the league still doesn't allow "artificial noisemakers" but if so....that's my fault haha. I used to bring a trumpet and blow it as a goal horn so they made that a rule.
MJ has dropped off too. They're now an average team in the lower division. Played then a few times this year.
Ravenwood, Brentwood, and Centennial are the biggest crowds easily.
Too bad MJ is no good now. Good times. My favorite part was beating Centennial 8-0 in the city finals when we rushed the ice and videotaped it haha. I don't think Ravenwood had opened yet when I was in school but I may be wrong. At least I don't remember them having their own team.

Also, is that no noisemakers rule still around?
I think i've seen a cowbell or two, but for the most part, they aren't. I wouldn't really know though. Lower division fans are quiet....
Hearing MJ is a lower division team with quiet fans is tough to hear haha
Their fans are better than most (heck, my team averages 2 students a game....and its always the same 2), but, yeah, they've taken a big step back hockey-wise. They were in the upper division last year and graduated a ton of good players, so they dropped down. These things move in cycles, they'll be back.
Are they still with Wilson Central or are they with another school now? Maybe that's old news but that's how it used to be, if it isn't still, because WC opened in 2002 and almost all their students came from MJHS.

MJ is now with Rossview and SC is with Hillsboro. They both are the main pieces of the partnership.

Heynow, I got to CHS and I have a coupleclose friends on the team. They seem to think we have a shot at state this year. And yes we do have quite a crowd sometimes
I played in GNASH from 2001 - 2005. I'll remain nameless for anyone I throttled.
Unless you played for Mt Juliet, I'm not sure you throttled anyone haha JK

it's all good this was back in 02-03. It was intense. There would be Franklin cops on hand when we played at Southern Ice
