Wellwood OR Koivu to the Pens

I would offer a 3rd and a mid level prospect.

Thoughts?

This gives the pens a damn fine 3rd line center, so DB could throw out 11 with 87 or 71, or 87 with 71.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Selanne would also be interesting, but I'm pretty sure that it it is not realsitic.

My offer was:

Kennedy+Tangradi+Jeffrey+1rst (I guess that the ducks could get better packages, but can't sell the farm atm.)

Not enough for Koivu. Selanne deal isn't bad but there's no way Murray trades him.

Selanne is likely to be a rental and it'd be suicidal to give so much up for that. Wellwood isn't needed.

It's just not worth talking about. Teemu has to waive and then choose a team.

I would rather the Jets resign Wellwood so he could play on our 3rd line next year if all we could get from him is a 3rd and a mid level prospect.

I remember a couple of years ago the Pens were looking for a center and Wellwood was available via free agency. They took Mike Comrie instead

As I remember it, Pittsburgh was looking for a winger to play with Crosby and convinced themselves that Comrie could play LW.

If Pens get Vermette, that's a possible trade. If we got Vermette, i'd be down for a Staal for Ryan offseason move.

How much it would take to get Wellwood to go to the pens? A bucket of fried chicken

A couple of years ago, Wellwood was fat and disinterested in conditioning, a lot of teams passed on him until Vancouver took a chance and he finally realized he was squandering his opportunities in the NHL by being lazy.

Bylsma would have crushed his soul if he came to the Pens camp, in typical "Wellfed" fashion.

I didn't want him then, don't want him on the Pens now.

I'd also love to see the Pens get Ryan.

Dupuis-Crosby-Ryan
Kunitz-Malkin-Neal

Wow, what a top 2 lines.

Wouldn't it make more sense to get a winger to play on the top 2 lines and not make Malkin or Staal play the wing?

Ducks would be interested in Staal to play WITH Ryan, not for Ryan. Or itd take Staal++ from our perspective.

Wellwood's actually having quite a decent season. I bet he'd cost more than most people think.

He is having a pretty decent season. Noel says nothing but great things about both his offense and defense. He's also called him his "fixer" as he has used Wellwood in almost every line to help "fix" those lines.

Not saying that I think he is amazing. But he is versatile, and can play on a couple of different lines. That, and with his ridiculously low contract, any team looking to acquire him for the playoffs doesn't need to make any other moves to fit him in. That's a plus.

For a $700K cap hit, he's done pretty well for the Jets this year. I think you need to at least throw in a bag of pucks as well.

Still would not go for very much, maybe a pick after the first round.

Your table is off. It took the +/- of 31 for me to notice it. Surprisingly "Team Wellwood" and 54 goals didn't do it.

I think he might get a second, most likely a third, in return if he's traded. He's a very creative offensive player and he can be effective playing both center or wing but he's small, soft and somewhat slow. He wouldn't fit in to the top-6 of most playoff teams and the top contenders would likely be looking more for depth on defense or checking forwards, which would bring his value down somewhat. However, a player taken in the third round is likely to not even amount to a career fourth-liner so it's not like that's much to give up. Even if a team chose to use him as an injury replacement for one of their top-6 forwards and had him as a healthy scratch until that (rather than using him in a bottom-6 role), a third would still be worth it for the insurance.

I've always said Wellwood would be an excellent money ball winger for the Pens. The guy can snipe, and he has a tendency to find open ice. Plus, he's a pretty decent two way player. I'd use him on one of Crosby or Malkins wings instead of as a center if it were me. Wellwood isn't a crest sniper, he knows where to put the puck to score.
