Absoluetly not, I consider a 40 goal scorer someone who scores 40 consistently maybe 4 times out of 5 seasons. There's maybe a handful of those guys I'm the league and pacioretty isn't and won't be one IMO
Call me biased but yes. On the Habs though? Maybe not. With the current level of talent down the middle? Probably not. Montreal typically has decent wingers over the years. It's somewhat historical considering the greatest franchise players are usually wingers (Moore, Lafleur, Richard, Geoffrion). I'd say that from that centre spot, only Beliveau and Morenz make it in the top 10 Habs ever and only one Hab pivot ever scored 50 (Pierre Larouche oddly enough). And the recent history has been pretty weak. You can't be a Cup contender without 2 top quality centres and the Habs too often have had just 1 (since the awesome Turgeon-Damphousse-Koivu depth that Houle so easily squandered we've had Saku, Ribeiro and Plekanec be the only ones to post seasons worthy of a #1 centre). Since Damphousse and Turgeon both had 38 in 1995-96 the Habs haven't a single 30 goal man at the position. The closest anyone came was Pleks with 29 in 2007-08. That's pathetic. 16 years without one single centre topping 30 speaks to the position being mostly playmakers for the Habs and mostly devoid of elite talent. So that said, Max needs a slightly better calibre of centers than Desharnais, Plekanec, Eller and Leblanc (our hypothetical top 4 next year) if he's going to pot 40.
I realize he has more goals then assaists but over his career I see him more of an assist guy. Something like 25-30 goals with 70 points... similar to a Pomminville. I don't see him ever hitting 40. Realistically only a handful of players will hit 40 goals.

Any particular reason why? Whenever I watch him play he seems like a guy who loves to shoot, and he's got a great shot too. Crashes the net a fair bit too, and doesn't really seem like playmaker, more of a shooter with good speed and size.

....and yet all it takes is for a player to hit 40 once to be a 40 goal scorer. Yeah, I think Max has it in him to hit that plateau at least once in his career. He'll look great on the wing on the U.S. Olympic team in 2014!

Thats my whole point people think cause you hit 40 once or twice in your career that you are a "40 goal scorer" no, you're a 30 goal scorer that had a career year and hit 40. Would you go around calling johnathan cheechoo a 50 goal scorer?

Yes.
He scored 50 goals in a season, so he's a 50 goal scorer in my book.
An empty netter hat trick and people are talking about him being a 40 goal scorer. Let him hit 30 first and then we can bring it up.
*facepalm*
Kessel has a hot start and people are talking about him scoring 50 or 60 and winning rocket richard trophy. Let him hit 40 first. See I can do that also, people on the Habs board were debating about him as a 40 goal scorer long before he got the hat trick.
I think he can hit 40 but 30 is more likely on a regular basis.
I can see him hitting 40 in his career but I don't know if it's something he can do more than once in his career. Could probably hit it a couple of times if/when the Habs improve their overall offense and their powerplay.

Do you realize he's tied for 4th in the league on even strength goals, only one behind Malkin? He's also coming back from an injury that could have jeopardized his career, and he's still fairly young, at 23 years old.
It's not only because of his hat trick, he's been a consistent goal scorer this season, and even last season after being recalled from Hamilton. He has 36 goals over the last 89 games. 40 goals seems a bit unlikely, even as a Habs fan. Most of us think his upside is around 35-35, but 40 goals is definitely a possibility. Under perfect circumstances, and especially if the league scoring goes up a bit, it could happen.

I don't think so. Pac can dish the puck from time to time, but he's more of a power forward, shoot first guy with great speed. In fact, his playing style is extremely close to Cole's, with more raw talent. I think he'll be pretty much even in the goal-assist ratio department unless he changes the way he plays in the future. As it is right now, I don't see him racking up 45 assists in a season.
He needs a more dynamic center/playmaker to reach that level. His biggest hindrance is he is frequently the target of the opposition, thus limiting him ability to create his own chances. That said, at only twenty three and having two seasons where he's on pace for thirty goals, Patches definitely has it in him.
And it reminds me of something. When discussing potential paces for young stars in this league, and top prospects I see WAY TOO MUCH of "potential 30 goal 70 point guy" how many of those guys do you think we can have in this league? How many do we currently have?
I know me posting this won't change anything but I seriously doubt we're going to have 50 70 point 30 goal scorers.

Desharnais is the most creative and arguably the best playmaker on the Habs, with Markov being injured. I think he has a lot of upside, so I wouldn't count him out just yet. It's a bit unfair considering how he's been the one feeding the puck to our two best goal scorers on the team since they've been put together.
Also, it is completely false to say he's the "targeted" player on the Pacioretty - Desharnais - Cole line. They are playing great as a whole and it is pretty obvious, to me at least, that the leading player on that line is Cole.

Well, Pacioretty is currently on pace for over 30 goals, and I'll say it again, he has 36 goals over the last 89 games, so it's definitely a possibility.
