The quote about Sauer's chinstrap breaking was in Andrew Gross' blog.

Based on the protocol that was used with Stall, he's probably been shut down for a month. That was almost three weeks ago. I wouldn't write off the season yet.

Nor would I. Making predictions and speculating about this stuff is useless.

Hope for the best, the defense with him would rival any in Ranger history:
Danny G- McD
MDZ- Staal
Strals- Sauer

Leetch, Beukeboom, Zubov, Lowe, Wells, Karpovtsev, Lidster is far and away better than our current crop.

Top four were, but the whole six?

This isn't 94. Recent years have shown you dont need that type of top 6 to win the Cup. Also I might get flamed for this one but Hank today is the best goaltender the Rangers have had in franchise history.

You're not gonna be flamed. I believe this too.

Yeah, for top-end talent you take the 94 group. But for lock-down defensive play throughout the top six? The current group has the edge.

Hopefully the Rangers sent Sauer to see Dr. Robert Cantu and the concussion specialists in Buffalo to find out what is going on. Sauer has had two setbacks. Does Sauer have something wrong with his neck? The back of his head hit the top of boards/glass. Staal had a procedure done in late September. Elliotte Friedman wrote about it a few weeks ago

Quote:
There was a point in New York Rangers defenceman Marc Staal's recovery that an issue was discovered with his C4, C5 and the "facet joints" around them. Remember that outstanding Winter Classic media conference where Glen Sather and Ed Snider fabulously taunted one another?

Sather suggested that day (it was Sept. 26) there was something -- not necessarily a concussion -- bothering his defenceman. It turns out that Staal was visiting a specialist to receive cortisone shots and undergo a procedure known as Radiofrequency Ablation, which can reduce vertebrae pain.

Both he and the Rangers were hopeful this could cure his headache issues, but it didn't. It wasn't until he rested and halted activity that things improved. (The vertebrae problem isn't necessarily connected to the hit from his brother Eric that caused the concussion).

However, Staal (like Pacioretty) was dealing with an area lower down on the spinal cord than Crosby. That made it much less likely their issues would affect the head and/or neck.
http://www.cbc.ca/sports/hockey/opin...-thoughts.html

Only issue is Staal rested after the season only to see the headaches return he started to prepare in the summer for the season.

Maybe the cortisone shots and the procedure coupled with the 1 month of no activity helped rather than just not doing anything for a month.

September 26 was the day Staal was in Buffalo getting the cortisone shots.

The '94 forward core was better too.

What we have going for us right now in Henrik to put us above. MDZ is the one guy in that matchup who looks favorably compared the our previous cup winning squad.

The good news is that we didn't get a whole ton of production from the role players last time around. Nemchinov, Tikkanen, Noonan, Anderson, MacTavish, Gilbert combined for only 15 goals in the playoffs, and that is 2 full lines worth of production. Our point production those playoffs was mostly out of 5 forwards and 2 defensemen. And Larmer's was mostly in the first 2 rounds.

Bottom line, having Sauer back makes our D better, but still not world shattering. I wouldn't view it as top 5 in the league... yet. If we are to win the cup, there is no doubt in my mind it will be Henrik that takes home the MVP.

Radiofrequency Ablation
This is the treatment that has greatly helped Kurt Sauer after his whiplash injury (he does not not have PCS)

Great post by Ranger Boy that illustrated often there is much more going on than meets the eye. It ain't as simple as a bump on the head.

Detroit, Nashville, Phoenix, Pittsburgh.

And my sleepers who are not necessarily "better" but very underrated D corps... Buffalo, Ottawa, Washington (who have been screwed by goaltending), and San Jose who's top 3 are very solid.

In the group of 7 D posted above...wasn't Mark Hardy also on the roster ? I also like our current top 4...if healthy although the 4 of them together could not match Leetch/Zubov offensively . The other guys like Beuk , Wells & Hardy would be dinosaurs in the game today with no interference -clutching or grabbing and Staal- McDon would be too soft in the 94 playoffs .

Nashville has better top 2 guys. Who else makes up that defense?
Pheonix- really? Yandle and OEL-in a few years.
Wouldn't be so quick to put Pitts ahead either. Letang is the only one who is better than the guys were have here.

Orpik and Martin are pretty capable and Orpik is something we do not have... a mean bruiser that can play a lot . I still like our top 4...but the Pens do have a nice trio .
