Puck carriers as penalty-free HITTERS in the new NHL

Have you noticed that many of the big hits allowed in the new NHL under the enforced rules are those leveled by puck carriers?

Ovechkin flattened Vishnevski tonight as one example of many.

NHLers can't finish checks with big hits anymore, but guys with the puck can go through anyone, and such plays are standing out more than ever.

Anyone else notice that?

ummm no, try watching a Sharks game and you'll see people like Doug Murry, Kyle McLaren, and Rob Davison (on occasion)landing huge open ice hits and checks along the boards.

That was better than the White hit. I haven't noticed that, btw.

Beat me to the Doug Murray reference.

this thread is not about who gives the biggest hits

it's about the freedom from penalties to level hits, hard hits, as long as one is charging with the puck

soooo many penalties have been given to guys finishing checks too hard in the new nhl, but puck carriers don't have to worry about it

it's like in the NFL, where the ballcarrier can do anything including grabbing the defensive players facemask and jerking it violently, a 15 yard penalty if it's done by the tackler by the way.

good comparison!

Ian Laperriere looks like a halfback surging into traffic, and having success at it this season.

Good point. Ovechkin had possession of the puck and was a half a foot in the air when he hit Vishnevski...no call. Is it considered self-defense?

if yer a defensemen, and you are standing still with a puck carrier coming at you, you deserve to be leveled by him.

Pavel Datsyuk has been doing this for years. Its nothing new.

Its just, unlike years past, Defensemen no longer have the ability to stand still and just grab you as you go by. Now you better have position, or you will be leveled.

and im all for that.
