I voted MDZ. McD is my favorite player and will be special. Unfortunately, I do not see him being a career Ranger. I could see him eventually ending up with the Canadiens.

What do you mean? They traded him. Why would he ever want to come back there? If anything I can see him going to Minny to be closer to his family or whatever
Both. If I had to choose, I'd grudgingly go with MDZ. McDonagh has more value (in a vacuum), but McD is the same kind of d-man that we have in Girardi and Staal (and more on the way in Erixon and McI). MDZ is really the only d-man of his kind at that level in the system.

Imo McDonagh has way more offensive upside than Girardi or Staal

I agree, but none of them are ever going to be offensive dynamos. They will always be balanced, defense-first players. Del Zotto is the only guy in the system capable of putting up 50+ imo.

Maybe, but I'll take McDonagh's stability and ability to play huge minutes over the 10-15 or so extra points that MDZ will bring.

In a vacuum, I'd agree with you. If I had to pick one of the two to start an expansion team, for example, it would easily be McDonagh. If we had to choose one or the other within the context of the state of the team? I take Del Zotto. He's the only guy we've got with legit PMD talent. Staal and McD are practically clones, and Girardi is similar. Thankfully, we don't have to choose, though, eh? The only way I can see either guy getting moved is if one of them regresses big time for an extended period (ie- more than a full season) or one of them sours on the team and demands a trade (neither of which I see as likely).

True. But when I saw an interview he did and was asked about the trade, I was left with the impression of unfinished business between him and the organization. I hope to the hockey god that I am wrong though.
It's a simple if question people, not an ultimatum .
For me, McD rather easily.
Amazing skater, is already great defensively and has untapped offensive ability (his skating alone will always allow him to have a suitable offensive game).
However, I don't think McD will ever have an offensive or passing game like Del Zotto. And if DZ learns to hit the net consistently? Forget about it.
I'm not all that worried about what happens when their contracts run out. Unless something really changes, neither of these players have been good enough to jump over their 2nd contracts and get UFA money as RFAs, like Doughty was, for example. I expect both of their deals to be somewhere between $2m and $3m.
I think if put to the sword, I would have to choose DelZotto, simply because of the variety he adds to our D group. However, I'm not voting because to me, the premise of the thread is crazy.
MDZ has the offense that this team needs. Staal and girardi could play McD's role if he were to leave, but i dont see anyone replacing MDZ's offensive skills currently. (im of course talking if we had to choose one, because i would love to keep both.)

Great post. McD has uncanny ability as a skater and tremendous lower body strength but MDZ has much more upside offensively because of his superior passing game and puck moving ability. Let's hope we don't have to be burdened with the problem of choosing between the two down the road.

I dont see the Rangers having a problem holding on to the two of them. I dont see them demanding the kind of money that will make the team have to let one go.
