Mathletic's 2012 Draft Rankings, Breakdown + 2013 Preview and 2012 vs 2013 Comparison

So, time for an update of my rankings. I thought I'd share what I've gathered. If you don't know by now, my rankings aren't based on my subjective analysis. They're based almost exclusively on stats. There are still some parts to work on. That said, most of the ranking is objective in itself and based on objective data.

Feel free to ask any questions. I won't bother writing down comments but I'll do my best to answer whatever question comes my way.

I'll add a mock soon.

... available there ...

http://hfboards.hockeysfuture.com/sh....php?t=1104313

edit: I made changes. Matheson moving up as well as Trouba moving by Rielly and Galchenyuk, same for Skjei and Schmaltz moving by Reinhart. McKee moving up as well as Cooper. I made a mistake computing stats for USHL d-Men.

I also moved Teräväinen up.

So here's my 2012 Draft Overall Rankings

Faksa and Gaunce brutally low. Hudon simply WAY too high. As is Severson (honestly, most scouts doubt he can scratch the top 30 let alone be the 14th best skater in the draft)...these rankings are probably the most off base I've seen so far. Slater Koekkoek doesn't deserve to be a second rounder and I'd put money on him not falling out of the top 30.

List is solid but you have a lot of guys shockinly high (Hudon, Schmaltz, Severson and Samuelson) Theres others I would critisize but they're out of the first round and anything can happen after pick 30.

Not really following the 2013 draft beyond the guys we've been hearing about for years (MacKinnon, Forsberg, Jones ect), but I'm not sure Jordan Subban should be that high. Very small, having a good rookie year but I'm not sure he's first round material.

I wish him the best, but Walker going that high would be a huge shocker considering his size. It means a lot in todays hockey. Last year it was Grimaldi for example who suffered because of that.

Great work, interesting to see that you got Collberg at 8th.

These are all pretty high. Higher than I've seen on any list:
12 - Charles Hudon, LW, Chicoutimi Saguenéens, LHJMQ
13 - Jordan Schmaltz, D, Green Bay Gamblers, USHL
14 - Damon Severson, D, Kelowna Rockets, WHL
Interested to here your take on this guys.

And for the 2013, I'm extremely surprised that Markus Søberg isn't there. I'm hoping for him to be the first norwegian taken in the 1st round of a NHL draft. We'll see, but he is extremely talented.

Though I don't dislike Gaunce by any means, I don't think he has super high potential offensively. In an ideal situation he plays behind a true n'1 center and may even be a 3rd centerman on a very strong team ideally. That said, I like his overall game. Good defensively and will chip in offensively when needed.

I like Faksa too but I'm not sure he's a n'1 centerman. Probably more of a complementary player a la Plekanec.

I've been a big fan of Hudon for a while. Not quite the same but reminds me some of Jordan Eberle. Unspectacular skills, yet very effective player.

It's quite normal these rankings are different than most as they are almost entirely based on stats.

And for the 2013, I'm extremely surprised that Markus Søberg isn't there. I'm hoping for him to be the first norwegian taken in the 1st round of a NHL draft. We'll see, but he is extremely talented.
Big fan of Hudon like I said. Knocks on him are his size and skating. However, he's projecting very well in the NHL statistically. Not quite the same but compares to Jordan Eberle on paper.

I've liked Schmaltz a lot since last year. I had him down early in the year due to a slow start on a pretty bad team in the USHL. However, since the trade he's come back to for. Again, skating is an issue but probably has great hockey sense. Production is excellent. Ahead of guys like Carlsson, Moore and other d-men who've come out of the USHL recently IMO.

Severson is another kid I like a lot. One of the younger players of the draft. IMO if you compare his first 2 seasons to Ceci's first 2 seasons, Severson comes out ahead. Obviously, Ceci is kicking on all cylinders this year but it tells you how good Severson can be. Unspectacular play at best yet very effective. Kelowna as a whole plays well defensively and Severson plays a big part in that.

I've talked a bit of Hudon and Severson but Samuelsson is projecting well as a power forward or at the very least a good grinder. I thought he played fairly well in the American program last year. Does not project by any means as a scoring machine but projecting as a good NHLer who'll play with grit.

I like the fact you have Oil Kings Samuelsson and Corbett as high as you do. Corbett is a strong all around Dman that I can see being a +/- fiend over his career while Samuelsson has a lot of Johan Franzen in his game.

I'm not a huge fan. He's having a good season no doubt. However, he's in his 3rd season and up to this point it all looked like he'd be a 3rd pairing d-man IMO.

Are you referring to at a WHL level or an NHL level?

I had the privaledge of watching Drouin,Duclair and Mathesoon tear up Midget AAA on the same team... man do i miss those days.

Edit, Brassard and Soumakis were also on that team, which finished 3rd at the Telus Cup last year.

Matheson a 4th round pick? He's not the late 1st round pick people expected him to be in the beginning of the season, but I'd be shocked if he's available when the 3rd round starts. Same with Thrower.

Ristolainen at 25? Care to explain why he's so low?

no, NHL level. He's already a very good d-man in the WHL. I'm just not sure there's a whole lot more than 3rd pairing potential at the next level. Could be wrong though.

Forgot to mention that no USHS players are included. I still have some more work to do on most USHS leagues.

Statistically he compares to Pierre Turgeon coming into the NHL. It remains to be seen how much he can fulfill but that's the "on paper" comparison I'd make.

The gap between 2 and 3 is fairly significant IMO. I think Grigorenko is much better than the next player at the position ... who then again, is a very good prospect in Galchenyuk and then Girgensons ... than Dumba is compared to Murray and the followers.

The gap is significant both in a 1 on 1, Grigorenko vs Dumba, and even more significant if you take into account the value each player has at his own position.

Matheson's play has dropped quite a bit. I'm not predicting he'll be picked in the 4th round. However, to this point, that's the kind of value he's showing me. A lot of defensemen have stepped up a lot more than he has. He started well in Dubuque but his play has slided quite a bit since the 10 to 15 game mark in the season.

I don't think he's been dominant in his domestic leagues. He surely has been good but not dominant. Obviously, a large part of it is due to the team he plays on. His TPS team pretty much blows both in the SM-Liiga and Junior A league. That said, still plenty of hockey to be played until the 2013 draft.

Why would a defenceman like Ristolainen have to be dominant? I mean it's not like he's a 5'8 winger.

Now that I noticed you have Teräväinen at 29, I really think you should either dramatically lower Teräväinen or put Ristolainen a lot higher.

Nice work Mathletic. In 2011, there were 7 forwards taken in the top 10, all who look like they might have top line potential. 2013 looks like it could be the same in terms of forwards. I know it is early, but could you project what forward crop between 2011 and 2013 (especially in the top 10) has more elite high end potential? And is 2013 a good draft if you are looking for a high end forward, even if you are picking from lets say 7-15?

Thanks

Not a criticism or anything really but if you are basing solely off stats, how does Aberg rate lower than Forsberg by such a large margin?

I think you might eat your words on this one. In my opinion, I see Galchenyuk as a better player than Grigorenko (not a ton but his work ethic is unmatched compared to Grig.) so to say it's "fairly significant" seems a bit bold.

Could Galchenyuk become a better NHLer than Grigorenko? Sure, but the guy picked 26th could end up a lot better than the guy picked 4th. Galchenyuk's injury makes him an unknown. Sure he was scouted a lot last year, but there's nothing to evaluate his progress upon this season. A lot rides upon improving year over year. Without this season's worth of play, Galchenyuk is far more risky to project, and that makes a big difference. That's especially true when talking about top 10 or possibly top 5 picks.
