Timonen - Coburn
Carle - Gill
Grossman - Meszaros
Gus
Haven't worked out the cap issue, but if we could get Gill and Grossman, I'd be prepared to give up Bourdon, on the hope we could reup at least one of them, because we'd still have Lilja as depth.

We'd need to throw a couple Phantoms in the deals.

Grossman is exactly what we should try to get. We can trade for him and resign him for a reasonable amount. If the Flyers are to go after Suter in the off-season Grossman would fit right into our cap situation. We need a good shut down defender for a cheap price. Grossman would be that man definitely.

Like others have said a 2nd and a prospect. Then try to resign him at or around what his pay is right now

CAPGEEK.COM CAP CALCULATOR

FORWARDS
Scott Hartnell ($4.200m) / Claude Giroux ($3.750m) / Jaromir Jagr ($3.300m)
James Van Riemsdyk ($4.250m) / Daniel Briere ($6.500m) / Brayden Schenn ($3.110m)
Wayne Simmonds ($1.750m) / Sean Couturier ($1.375m) / Jakub Voracek ($3.750m)
Matt Read ($0.900m) / Maxime Talbot ($1.750m) / Zac Rinaldo ($0.544m)
Tom Sestito ($0.605m) / / Jody Shelley ($1.100m)

DEFENSEMEN
Andrej Meszaros ($4.000m) / Ryan Suter ($6.500m)
Braydon Coburn ($4.500m) / Kimmo Timonen ($6.333m)
Erik Gustafsson ($0.900m) / Nicklas Grossman ($1.925m)
Andreas Lilja ($0.737m)

GOALTENDERS
Ilya Bryzgalov ($5.666m) / Sergei Bobrovsky ($1.750m)

CAPGEEK.COM TOTALS (follow @capgeek on Twitter)
(these totals are compiled using the bonus cushion)
SALARY CAP: $66,500,000; CAP PAYROLL: $69,196,944; BONUSES: $3,555,000
CAP SPACE (23-man roster): $858,056

I gave him somewhat of a raise and Suter at that price is about right. Gives us enough room to make a call-up and we could always just waive Shelley(which I think is becoming more of a possibility)

Also would love the Flyers to get Dayton Thrower. What a name. Sounds like a man to me
Think Coburn who can actually do it. Of course he needs to transfer his game to NHL level but if I could compare him I would say Coburn size speed but can execute pretty much every play.

He's going to get more than just a modest raise. He'll get at least $3m on the open market

you don't think so?

There's always a GM/Owner dumb enough to pay someone what he wants, especially when he's pretty much the only good physical defenseman available.

Ville Leino is all the proof you need when it comes to that

3 million is more than Grossman will get. I see him more than 1.925, but no way he gets 3. 2.2 maybe. Any higher than 2.5 is silly. He's the number 5 defenseman in Dallas. Getting seriously over-valued right now.

Just for the people looking ahead for next year, if the Flyers draft a defenseman in the first round, he's going to have a decent chance to make the team if the Flyers sell out for Suter. They're going to need another spot for someone with a low cap hit. Which all said, will be dumb. I don't what happened to Sbisa happen again.

If Bourdon wants to pass up some money for a one-way deal and make less than Lilja, who we can hopefully whisk away somewhere, he has proven he can be a capable reserve player.

If Suter will sign for a cap hit of only $6.5M, he'll be a Predator.

I just don't see anyone else getting him for less than $7M, probably more.

Grossman will probably end up in the mid $2's.

More realistically, we should sign Grossman AND re-up Carle for the second pairing, then decide if it's Gus or MAB who plays with Mesz.

I don't understand why anyone seriously thinks he will get $7 million. Have you been paying attention to the trend in the NHL the past few years? Players are getting TERM, not dollars. GMs have decided that in order to reduce cap hit, they will give these players all the years their heart desires.

Players over $7 million:
-Oveckhin - 13 years in 08
-Malkin - 5 years in 08
-Crosby - 5 years in 07
-Staal - 7 years in 08
-Nash - 8 years in 09
-Lecavalier - 11 years in 08
-Heatley - 6 years in 07
-Gaborik - 5 years in 09
-Stamkos - 5 years in 11
-Weber - 1 year in 11
-Gomez - 7 years in 07
-Campbell - 8 years in 08
-Vanek - 7 years in 07
-Spezza - 7 years in 07
-Iginla - 5 years in 07
-Thornton - 3 years in 10
-Doughty - 8 years in 11

So only 4 deals (Stamkos, Weber, Thornton, and Doughty) have been signed in the past 2 years that exceed an AAV of 7 million; and all 4 of them were re-signings. Is Suter in the same class as those guys? The Kings may even wish they could undo the Doughty deal.

Brad Richards was the #1 UFA last year, and came out under 7 with the NYR who overpay everybody.

I'd expect Suter to get 7 years or more at somewhere between 6 and 7 (closer to 6 imo). It wouldn't even shock me if his number comes in just below 6 while getting BIG years.

I don't think he'll get more than 3 million either, but at the same time NHL GMs can make some strange decisions on July 1. His salary will probably depend quite a lot on what he'll do in the playoffs (if he even plays there).

To add to what DU posted, we don't know yet if Suter is even interested in re-signing with Nashville regardless of what they offer. He might go for less money to go to a more "storied" franchise, looking more set to make cup runs during his prime. 6.5 per year in Detroit/Chicago/Philadelphia or 7 in Nashville?

Interesting development from my friend who was just at the game. He was sitting immediately next to Ed Snider in a suite. He texted me and said:

"Just sat next to snider for the game. Check out his phone speed dials. He picked it up in the third and called holmgren and said I want a defenseman. We may need two. Then slammed down the phone."

Sorry for the sideways images. I rotated them before uploading to imgur but it doesn't seem to want to work.

Not too long ago weren't there pictures of Sniders phone from the wing bowl?

I don't know how much I believe these friend stories, and that's nothing offensive to you or your friend, but its hard to believe these stories on the interwebs.

Hopefully, not two rentals. I wish he said "get me Suter"

I think Suter is a pipedream. I expect rentals.

You just can't add significant salary to this team until the Pronger situation is more clear. It certainly looks like he is probably done for good, but you have to be sure before you go adding 6+ million dollar D-men.

I hope. I already said I want Grossman and good work with all those players making over 7 million post. I am also in the boat thinking Suter won't touch that cap hit, more like 6.2 -6.8 at the highest. Grossman and Sutton would be two bad Defensive dmen to add at the deadline, and most likely they won't kill the farm or picks.

I wouldn't be surprised if they end up getting a guy that no one has mentioned yet. Probably a solid rental and a really crappy rental. Fedor Tyutin???? Howson was at the game after all.

Bad defensive defensemen? As in they suck or as in toughness?

Fedor has a lot of years left, but if Carle goes the other way maybe.

Oh, great, an angry Snider throwing a tantrum and giving absolute orders to his GM. This will end well. It did last time.
