I can't say I liked him all that much. He sucked for a while then seemed to "get it" a bit more in time...he brought some physical play and could occasionally look like a good veteran d man, but never really became a consistent, dependable player I felt confident being out there.

Something like this for me as well. Of all the bottom pairing dmen we've had on the team over these last five years or so, Alberts probably ranks somewhere in the middle on my frustration-level scale. I'd rather have him than Lilja.

Alberts started off quite poorly with the Flyers but by the end of the year I really liked him.

I also did not hate Alberts. I think expectations were too high when we got him or he just started off poorly and then he ended up playing at a decent level (as far as bottom pairing d). He was still better than many of our patch-work players on the blue line.

Eh, lately all the defenders, minus Kimo, havent been very good. They havent been tremendously worse than Carle/Meszaros/Coburn have.

Completely agree with you. It seems like your entire D unit is struggling in a major way. I watched the NYR/PHI game start to finish yesterday and I couldn't believe the number of breakdowns in the D zone. It wasn't the young guys either, it seemed to be the vets, time and again.

How exactly were expectations high?

Honestly, in some ways, I'm happy that Gus is mostly invisible, mainly because even if he's not notable on the offense, it seems he's doing what he should on the defense usually.

I'd like someone to chart our goals against and pick out someone to blame on each one.

I promise most of our screw ups this season will be goalie related.
A large number of our other screw ups will be forward related.
Another chunk will be Carle + rookie blueliners + Lilja/Walker.
Then the rest will be on Meszaros, Coburn, and Timonen.

Though I will say that Carle, Meszaros, and Coburn aren't winning any awards for the last two weeks. They've stunk it up recently.

I think even if we add depth to the blueline it's not going to solve all of our problems.

You'll notice our team scrambling down low more often than not because forwards are out of position defensively forcing defensemen to move around a lot more.

Remember last season and the year before when the defensive zone was far less hectic? Yes, thank Pronger, but also thank Carter and Richards.

Also, please someone take Briere away from the middle. He's not scoring enough to make up for defensive lapses.

rotate them, but tbh, with the way Lilja played last game, he should be the 6th defenseman right now when everyone is healthy

What? I thought Lilja played terrible last night. I counted him getting beat wide 3 or 4 times.

I would go Gus but I'm probably in the minority. From practice it seems as if Gus is the odd man out

I actually thought Lilja looked horrendous last night. He got caught 4-5 times in the offensive zone, making 2 on 1s or 2 on 2s with one of them being a forward.

Lilja had a few good shifts, especially on the pk. He is slooowwwww, however. I'd still play both Bourdon and Gustafsson over him.

I think the 6th spot will be Bourdon's to lose. I'd like to give him a rest at times and slip in Gustafsson (or Lilja) down the stretch though. We'll most likely need more than six defenders if we're going anywhere in the playoffs, and if we can have the 7th guy at least somewhat up to speed that would help. Bourdon could probably use the rest as well.
