I think that his inclusion to Team Canda would have made him a top line C at the time. But we ALLLL have said, he is better suited as a #2 C and match up against the other teams top line. But for sure, when he was in Philly, we ALLLL had him as a bonified #1 C. How many times did we say...we have lines 1A(Richards), 1B(Carter), and 1C(Briere)

Schenn looks great right now. I think his ideal role in the NHL will be as a second line center, but he certainly has the potential to be a number 1 at some point.

I'll admit I wasn't sold on Schenn at first because he had unrealistic expectations placed on his shoulders because of who he was traded for. I think he should have been shielded by the Flyers at first and they failed to do so. After the broken foot and the concussion, it took Schenn to get back on track and now that he's doing so, you can see he's getting more and more comfortable with the game. That's a plus.

I still wish the Flyers would have given him the Giroux treatment with regards to letting him play in the minors for 30+ games and then bring him up on a full time basis. With that being said, you can tell that he's going to be a real good player for a long time to come.

I really like the balance (key word here) that the Flyers are developing with regards to Giroux/Schenn/Couturier as the centers. When Schenn and Couturier mature a little more and get a few more seasons under their belts, the Flyers will be able to interchange those three guys amongst the three center positions, giving the opposition fits.

I'm glad someone else sees through the myth of Mike Richards.

I had overlooked this. I thought I would just point out just because a player enters the NHL as one position doesn't mean they will stay at that position. It's not impossible to see Couturier or Schenn possibly move to wing.

Just a few other notable players who are on or were on the Flyers...

- Danny Briere, plays both center and RW.
- Simon Gagne was originally a center to start his career but moved to LW.
- Peter Forsberg was a center but played RW a few seasons in Colorado.
- Claude Giroux was originally a RW but moved to center.
- Patrick Sharp was originally a center but now plays RW.
- RJ Umberger played every forward position.

Plus as long as you are in the top 6 you can get top line minutes. Carter and Richards would both average 18-20 minutes a game playing on different lines.

I don't know about throwing around the word superstar, but he's looking better over time. Maybe its me but I was expecting a little more after being told we were getting the best player not playing in the NHL. And yes I'm taking his early injuries into account. I'm not disappointed by any means, I'm just not ready to label the kid the next superstar.

Dare we say this kid is looking like a young Bobby Clarke? Clarkie himself predicted great things about Brayden after the Flyers greats practiced for the Winter Classic alumni game.
And so it begins...

Lol if I had a nickel...

Mike Richards was Bobby Clarke
Steve Downie was Bobby Clarke then Rick Tocchet
Claude Giroux was Bobby Clarke
Ryan Kesler was almost Bobby Clarke
Couturier was Bobby Clarke and even had the teeth
Now Schenn is Bobby Clarke

I vote for Couturier on the basis of teeth. He also needs to let his hair grow.

Quick question about Briere. I noticed his final two years pay him a combined 5 mill. If he retires before those two years, and basically leaves 5 mill on the table, does his cap hit still count against the cap?

Wasn't Richards projected to be a second-line center with captain material from the get-go? Who was doing all this overrating?

No, only 35+ contracts count regardless. I doubt he'll retire though.

Flyers fans. A lot of Flyers fans consider(ed) him to be much more then a 2nd line center. Some would go as far to consider him a franchise talent.

I guess it depends on how you want to define 1st line and 2nd line center, but he was top 15 among centers (according to who play center on NHL.com at least) in points in 07-08, 08-09 and 10-11 and top 30 in 09-10. While having a pretty damn solid all around game (and also having guys like Carcillo and Nödl on his line in the later seasons).

A lot of Richards points came on the PP though, but he is still among the top 30 in three of those four seasons if you only count even strength points (Carter has a lot better numbers here though). I'd say that Richards is a top-30 center in the NHL, who benefits in having another top center on the same team, so he can focus on the overall and shutting down the opponent as much as point-producing.

His career is coming to an end anyways, its not like a crosby concussion. At that age you realize you have enough money and risking further damage is unnecessary. Of course i wish no harm to Briere he is one of my favorites, but his cap hit isnt matching his production.

I've said this every year since we signed him... and then playoffs roll around. I'm not doing that again for a while.
