Chris Botta on Chris Kreider (All Kreider discussion)

Quote:
General managers are reluctant to sign college players late in the N.H.L. season because if a player makes the lineup for even one game, a year is counted on his three-year entry-level contract, moving him closer to free agency.

But Rangers General Manager Glen Sather may not think twice about signing Kreider this spring when the Eagles’ season ends, especially if the Rangers lose a top forward to injury after the Feb. 27 trade deadline.

I say if we have a shot at the Cup, **** worrying about burning the ELC and get him in the line-up.

Who knows if the ELC rules will even be the same/exist after the new CBA is negotiated (hopefully, lol).

Good lord I bet the Rangers feel like Jerry York is Eli from "There Will Be Blood". Just a thorn in their side.

No more hype!

Christ if this kid doesn't pot at least 20 goals his first year with NYR people are going to be eating him alive.

It doesn't matter. I see him being traded before the deadline anyway. And I will shed a tear or punch a wall when that happens because I love this kid. He's going to be a very good player and possible elite player in the NHL. He has the size, speed, shot, and smarts.

Welcome to the forum. And don't worry, unless a STAR player still in his 20s is coming back Kreider isn't going anywhere. I really don't think you have anything to worry about. A spot on the 2012-2013 NYR opening night roster is his to lose.

Yes, but I was talking about him returning to play hockey with BC for one final season.

“I’ll sit down with Chris at the end of our season,” said York, the Eagles’ coach for the last 18 years. “The question I always ask top prospects in his situation is, ‘Do you want to finish your collegiate career with the teammates in your graduating class?’ That’s a big deal for many college players.”

Dear Lord, the hilarity that would ensue on this board if that occurred.

I jokingly mentioned about a month ago that Kreider would return for his senior year but it didn't seem like a real possibility. Now it sounds like Jerry York is going to try his darnedest to convince him to stay. Rangers may have to up the ante in persuading him to turn pro.

It would be insane. However, regardless of what Jerry says I just can't see Chris having anything more to prove at this level.

I agree, I'd be shocked if he stayed. And I think with the Rangers performing so well, I can't imagine why he wouldn't want to be a part of a cup contender as soon as he possibly can.

Heard this before.

It's not about proving anything. People made the same argument last year. If he wants to stay in college and graduate with his friends, or spend their last year together, he'll do it regardless of proving anything.

But it's nothing like last year. You think he's going to graduate this summer and then stay at BC for another year just to play college hockey and hang out with his friends? Don't see it.

NYR would have to be very desperate to do that. Rushing our top prospect with zero professional experience into a pressure cooker with no established chemistry with anyone while burning a year of his ELC for a few months of play is just... stupid.

Wonder if he regrets going back to school at all after seeing how well the Rangers are doing this season.

i thought we can sign him without losing a year of elibigibility as long as he doesn't play any games in the NHL. Or can we just sign him to an AHL ATO and if we really want to call him up, commit to losing that year?

It'd make quite a story if Kreider signed right after college and jumped right into the NHL.

Especially if we stand pat at the deadline...

He'd likely go right on that vacant, 2nd line left winger spot we have.

That is correct. He only loses a year of eligibility if he plays an NHL game.
