I've knocked Timmins hard in the past. But after talking with a scout who is no longer with the Habs he changed my opinion. Most of Timmins glaring mistakes were not his fault.

I am good with Timmins as long as he doesn't pass up Galchenyuk

C'mon, man, you can't leave it at that. Give us examples. Don't leave us hanging.

yeah I mean Carey Price, Max Pacioretty, Ryan McDonagh, such awful, awful picks.

Since the lockout his first rounders

Price - gem

Fisher - bust

McDonagh - gem
Pacioretty - gem

2008 no first round pick

Leblanc - looking good in the NHL and nearly a full time NHLer

Tinordi - looking good in junior

Beaulieu - looking good in junior.

So really there is only 1 pick to complain about, and every team in the league has taken a first round bust in that time, many a lot higher than 20th overall in David Fischer.

Hard to findy anyone better than the boys in Carolina, Detroit and San Jose.
What? I'm tired of the Detroit myth.
Here's the link: http://www.hockeydb.com/ihdb/draft/t...r00005492.html

They got very lucky with about three draft choices more than ten years ago. They have NOTHING, nada, nil, rien, zip, zilch, zero to show for just about every draft since 1999. In 98 they get one guy. In 99 they get one guy. In 2004 they get one guy. Actually check your stats.

If you mostly refer to the Fischer pick, well Timmins didn't love Fischer as much as the guy who referred him did...yet, Timmins decided to go for it. The head scout will always be at fault or will always be positively the one responsible. He takes the final decision.

Timmins is very good. The scary thing is that he could even be better. And we will need him to be better 'cause that's how we will be building this team. Aside from Cole, our rocks at every position are draft picks.

Whitesnake, this is an honest question, do you ever have anything positive to say?

Timmins was hired at the end of '02. This is his 11th season with the Habs.

If Timmins had picked Giroux or Lucic in the 2006 draft, his pick resume with the Habs would arguably be the best in the NHL from 2003 onward (considering pick amount and average position). Outside of that draft he's done well.

Wasn't Savard still running the 03 draft though?

I've heard that Andrei and Urquhart were both "Andre Savard picks" and not Timmins choices.

I know that Gainey has just taken over and I recall hearing that Gainey wasn't going to have anything to do with the draft. I also remember Savard speaking highly of the playoffs that Urquhart just had. As for the picks in general, Timmins was brought in by Savard since they worked together with the Sens, so I would assume he had a lot of say with Savard at the time of the '03 draft.

As for Kostitsyn, I know that Timmins scouted him a ton, I recall hearing that he saw Kostitsyn over 40 times so I'd wager he had input on that pick.

In defense of Whitensnake, he is a critical poster who comments on things how he sees them. He is a largely unbiased poster on these boards. No point being positive when it doesnt make sense or if takes away from an accurate assessment.

I don't have a ton of time to type it out but in an outline. Gainey wanted to go with a general consenus of scouts instead of one opinion. At least in the early rounds. This changed after the '06 draft and the mistake on Giroux. Timmins since has the direct say. Timmins wanted Giroux as he lived just aways from him and he had seen him play dozens of times that year. But our Western scout was crazy over Fischer(scout is still with the team to best of my knowledge), he said he had coached Fischer in high school and he was a diamond in the rough. In '08, Timmins was focused on Carlson but Gainey traded the pick on draft day. I never asked directly on Kostitsyn so don't know exactly what went on there. But I do know Timmins has changed his scouts since then except for two.
