Yes, they did. People really think that.

Any trade this team makes should be designed to help us this year, but ultimately help us next year as well.

The NHL announced on Monday that Rinaldo has a disciplinary hearing scheduled later this afternoon with the Department of Player Safety, headed by Brendan Shanahan, to discuss his first period hit on Detroit’s Jonathan Ericsson.

The hit occurred with 6:28 remaining in the period. Video of the hit is below (apologies for poor quality).

Rinaldo was assessed a charging minor on the play, but that doesn’t always dictate supplementary discipline.

As you can see, Rinaldo catches Ericsson as soon as he turns his head after making a backhand pass behind the Detroit net. It is not a “blindside” hit per se, in the sense that Ericsson’s complete body is facing Rinaldo’s direction.

The hit itself is relatively clean. Rinaldo does not use his elbows and the primary point of contact appears to be Ericsson’s chest.

As NBC Sports Network’s Brian Engblom says in the broadcast, Ericsson put himself in a vulnerable position for looking back to making his pass. But where Rinaldo may be in trouble is that he takes a good 4 or 5 strides, lining him up, before delivering the blow.

That’s where the charging call came in. And that’s where he could face a suspension.

Rinaldo will be on the conference call with Flyers general manager Paul Holmgren. The decision may not be announced quickly, depending on Shanahan’s other workload for the day, since the Flyers don’t play again until Thursday night.

Would have been nice to have this level of scrutiny when Lindros was playing although I suppose he would have had his fair share of disciplinary actions against him...

I seem to remember Lindros damn near killing a guy from Ottawa on a board/charge. Lets see if I can find the Youtube.

Andreas Dackell

.

Though I don't think I could call it a board or a charge.

Edit: On third thought, he jumped. 5 minute charge.

Rinaldo doesn't leave his feet, until after collision, and doesn't make contact with head. Whether it was too late of a hit is the issue.

Don't you do it, Shanny! Don't you do it!

I didn't see the game but it didn't look like a bad hit from the replays I saw. He glided into him, no head contact and made the hit with his body. If he gets suspended, well it's just plain dumb.

indeed it will be sad if the NHL takes away from rinaldo what he is best at..

that is massive checks that make the opposition leary..

i have no faith in this league anymore when it comes to doing anything that sides with the flyers thou..

i suspect he'll get a lame ass 2game suspension...

This is a good thing for Rinaldo. I don't think he'll get suspended but it will remind him of how close he is to crossing the line.

I thought it was barely a penalty actually. shoulder hit, no target to the head. Ericsson was caught admiring the pass and Rinaldo hit him.

How in the world is that even a penalty. Great hit. God the NHL has become so *********.

Rinaldo was speeding in from the blueline to make the hit. Definitely a Charge, though I dont think it should be a suspendable one

I am absolutely ok with the penalty. I don't necessarily think it's suspendable though. That hit was AT BEST very questionable; and I'd have been very mad if it happened to one of our d-men. I complain about the wuss-ifcation of hockey a lot, but these type of hits just don't really have a place, imo.

There's no doubt it was a charge. They've likely been watching him in the league office, especially since he slew footed Parise.

Another game, another defeat. We'll be lucky if we make it out of the first round with this kind of defensive effort.

Well Rinaldo has been suspended 2 games according to the NHL website.

I'm betting this has a lot to do with Rinaldo admitting to Shanahan that he slewfooted Parise on purpose because he was frustrated. (According to an earlier Friedman tweet)

That's what it sounded like in the video. He wanted to suspend him, but instead told Rinaldo not to give him a reason to do it.

Last night he did, and Shanahan laid it out pretty clearly. He even said Ericsson needed to be more aware of a hit, but this is the NHL in 2012, and the player making the hit has more responsibility. People either need to accept that if they're going to be a player and/or fan.

As I've said, life as Zac Rinaldo.
