Quoted for truth.

Speaking of Sabres broadcasts, I really enjoyed Adam Benigni last night on the telecast. Thought he brought a new opinion to the table. I realize it was because the game was on channel 10, but it'd be cool if they could get him part time, for some games atleast, for more games. He was solid IMO.

I'll miss him, I enjoy his comments. But if he feels it's time, so be it. Whoever they get to replace him is going to SUCK. 100% guaranteed.

Danny Gare. **shudders**

He was wretched in Columbus, he's been wretched here...and he will probably continue to torment us.

Always loved Neale's color commentary. I was thrilled when the Sabres brought him on. It's his time, and has been for a few years. But even so, his one liners still crack a smile on my face regardless of how corny or overused some are.

It will always be "He'll serve two minutes, or less" to me.

I like Harry. Better than most other cc's in the league and certainly better than Gare.

RJ's thoughts on his new blog seems to indicate that he's going to stick around a bit longer: http://sabres.nhl.com/club/news.htm?...L%7CBUF%7Chome

As long as Sylvester doesn't take over on a permanent basis.

Of course he's sticking around. They'll take him out of that booth in body bag. He just likes to gripe about the gig once in a while. I have an audio tape of him from the early 80s from an interview he did on Channel 2 (with Wes Goforth!). He was complaining then about how brutal the travel was.

I laughed when Rick said he carried around a tablet, because I immediately had a mental image of Harry's tablet -- an actual stone tablet.

Also interesting to hear Rick talk about being "well drugged" while broadcasting with a broken rib a few years ago. I bet that's when he was calling Adam Mair Lindy Ruff.

Great. Way to scare me.

I liked Neale when he was on CBC, but he's been hit or miss with the Sabres. I hope they don't stick Gare or Robtiaille into the spot. I'd like Barnaby. Sure, he had the embarrassing DWI, but he is a good personality, was very good on ESPN, and enjoyed him during his "tryout" in the 2007-08 preseason.

During the road trip, Duff was in the booth and commenting on the action - and did a great job at it. He may not have talked as much as Gare out of deference but I have no doubt he'd be more than capable as a full-time color guy. He obviously speaks to the players and coaches beforehand to get a sense of what's happening with the team, and does his homework on opponents (likely more than Neale or Ray do).

Even on NHL Network, where he is relegated as host to "set the table" for the analysts, I find him often wasting his talent when his comments are better than those of the "experts".

I just find Duff easy to listen to, both in terms of voice (pitch, rythym/pacing intonation, vocabulary) as well as commentary. Maybe that's because he's a broadcast professional.

Harry's strong suit is he keeps it sparse, IMO. I'm fine with sparse.

Sylvester's voice is quite soothing and sensual.. I wouldn't mind if he did both the play-by-play AND the color commentary after RJ and Neale are gone.

You nailed it right there, bg - Duff is a trained professional speaker who obviously has an education and background in journalism and media. Neale is a former coach who made his entry off sharing his own personal experiences and stories. The former will always be a fit in an evolving sport while the latter will eventually grow old, stale and redundant.
