Guy has a serious weight issue. For perspective, he only weighs 15 lbs LESS than Chara (5 inches shorter, but its all relative).
Do. Not. Want.
Bearing in mind that Chara's a complete fitness freak. Medically speaking he's actually slightly underweight.
You know who else is about 6 inches shorter and only 20 pounds less than Chara? Milan Lucic. So Penner has like 1 inch and maybe 10 pounds on Looch. Seems pretty incremental.
If it's a choice between Penner & standing pat, I'll choose Penner.
If it's a choice between Penner & a player that has a pulse and is healthy enough to skate, I'll take the other guy.
What I'm saying is for a depth move the guy could be had on the cheap. If Horton isn't back for the playoffs, and another forward goes down, we need "someone" to step in as it doesn't appear we have a lot of strong candidates in Providence. I think Penner has more potential to score goals for us than Hamill/Caron (who also may be playing depending on potential injuries) You can never have too much depth.
I'm not talking about signing Penner with the idea of re-signing him. I agree with all the negative comments (slow, unmotivated, iHop champion, etc.). However, given the state of the "market", it's quite possible that there is very little for the Bruins to pick-up, given that other buyers have more assets to give up. The one benefit we do have is cap space. I don't agree with the comments that it would be better for Chia to "do nothing". We need NHL caliber players who can step in if "our" players get hurt. Dustin Penner is a proven NHL scorer. I'd rather have Ruutu, Smyth, etc., but if we can't, he is a better alternative than "nothing".
It's making a move for the sake of making a move. Pouliot or Caron would likely give you similar output on the third line and far more effort.

Pretty much this.
I've had my fill of Penner from his years in Edmonton. Good when he's on, but totally useless when he's off. And he's usually off. Intolerable to watch. Totally devoid of hockey sense too.

I will defer to your seen-more-of-Penner opinion in this matter.

Guess I'm not getting the argument.
The man threw his back out while eating a stack of pancakes.
All you need to do it google image him to "get" the argument:
How can you, in good faith, ask others to "bear in mind" that Z is a fitness freak while not giving Lucic the same credit? He's a man-beast AND his spinal condition robs him of at least a couple of inches.

yes Looch would be around 6'6 250 and wouldn't be as compact/fast. He would be just an enforcer i believe. The condition is a good thing IMO.
if its Penner v Pouliot for that third line wing spot, i might have to say Pouliot.. Penner can be good when hes on like someone said, but most of the time hes a useless player (these days anyway).
I say go after a vet with experience. Pouliot and Penner are both inconsistent. Pouliot, from my experience, leaving a lot to be desired in 2nd half and playoffs.

What, you don't desire 1 goal in 20 games and a playoff history of zero goals?
The luster is coming off Benny. He built up a lot of goodwill, but there's no award in the playoffs for skating hard and being on a cheap contract. His fall to the mean (or actually below it), has made it semi-imperative for Chia to get 2 forwards. He wanted one already when Horton was healthy & Pouliot looked like a top 9 forward.

I used to think that about Michael Ryder and boy did he shut me up last April, May and June.
I think BP has been OK, not great. But I am really hoping he steps up his game in the playoffs.
Well, are we desperate enough to give this kid a shot now?
We're desperate for decent buy-low candidates. I'd like to hope we can keep a kid motivated for a couple months and into a playoff run. It's worth a shot.

I really feel we should be looking at any options...if someone like Penner can be had for a minimum, it at least provides "insurance".
I'd hate to see mgt get desperate and make a move that could hurt the B's in the future.
