SI: "the Little Ball Of Hate"

"the Little Ball Of Hate"

Quote:
He was a regular in the principal's office in middle school in suburban Halifax, visits made more awkward because his mother, Lynn, taught there. "My mom would hear my name on the P.A., 'Brad Marchand, report to the principal's office,' and you could hear the clatter of her high heels coming down the hallway a mile away," he recalls. Marchand figures he inherited his nose from his father, his brassiness from her.

Thanks sooshii.

We call him Brat Marchand. It's funny that the coach does as well.

This was a really nice story...

Quote:
In Claude Julien's Manichaean world, the Bruins' coach separates Marchand into Good Brat and Bad Brat. "He's a good brat when he stays within the rules and disrupts the other team," Julien says. "He's a bad brat when he takes bad penalties and hurts our team. During the playoffs I was meeting with him twice a day about that. He's not a guy who doesn't get it. He gets it. He just slips out of it, and you have to reel him back and spell it out again. Before Game 5 [in Vancouver] when I was done talking, he said, 'Can I say something to you, Coach? ... I just want you to understand I appreciate what you're trying to do for me. I know how I am. And I want you to know I'm appreciative that you continue to help me through this.'" Moved by the memory, Julien pauses. "You don't hear that often from players."

thanks for posting.

a great story.

I am so glad he's on the bruins. I would just hate him if he wasn't.

I dunno, I don't like this "Little Ball of Hate" and "Rat" business... those are Verbeek (who he definitely reminds me of) and Linseman. He needs his own nickname. Nose Face Killah is a good start.

Nah, Julien doesn't know how to coach young players.

that is funny, yet a bit ridiculous about the spelling error on his tattoo.

Its really amazing the type of impact this kid had in his 1st year. Aside of the super scorers (Gretz, Crosby, OV etc.), you hardly ever see such contribution from a rookie. We have been blessed with Lucic & Bergeron who have stepped in out of nowhere and instantly contributed. But dare I say Brad had a better 1st year than them. Imagine 6 years down (that is if he avoids the godfather Vignault's vendetta) the road when he gains experience

Just a heads up on the link: it goes straight to the 2nd page of the article for whatever reason.

Gotta say, my favorite line was this one from Marchand:

Quote:
"If Vancouver kept their mouth shut, which they rarely do, I don't think there would have been as much publicity about the hit and don't think there would have been as long a suspension."
Even in an article, he's chirpin' the Nucks.

So do you think he pushed kids and waited for teachers and the principal to get in the way and then chirped at them some more?

Something along those lines. He's a funny looking little guy that decided instead of just getting made fun of his whole life he was going to give it right back...and then some. Fortunately for us, he's a great hockey player.
