It's a good deal, Sutton's provided avoid average skill, and alot of toughness. Add to the fact he seems to Want to be an Oiler, not a bad thing all-around.

Yup. But there is ample reason to believe that Tambo will continue to use the hope and pray method that he has relied on throughout his tenure.

Hope and pray that Whitney will return to form....hope and pray that Petry will continue to progress.

Well there's plenty of young talent up front he could trade to get better now.

The defence needed to be addressed in the off season last summer. It would make more sense for Tambo to wait until this coming off season before he attempts to address this issue.
See if he can add to the team without giving up assets...if he can't then look at the trade possibilities.

Again, not disagreeing, but you seem to require it fixed now, and I'm reminding you that could have been done with the excellent young forwards on this team. Flip one, defense fixed, right now.

Actually...I suggested it should have been fixed at the beginning of the season and into the early part of the season.

In all honesty (at this point) I don't think the team can afford to send any roster players the other way.

It won't be necessary. They likely will have a top 3 pick again. There is also a possibility they trade Hemsky for a young asset (rumours of Blum). between Hall, RNH, Eberle, Paajarvi, Gagner and likely one of Yakupov/Grigorenko/Murray/Dumba, as well as recent 1st and 2nd rounders (Marincin, Pitlick, Hamilton, Klefbom, Musil), they are well positioned to trade some of the draft picks in 2013 for NHL players (they have the 1st round pick and two 2nd rounders).

I'd imagine something like Paajarvi+1st+2nd will get a very good player without depleting the roster.

The organization got what they wanted. Another top 3 pick and a good development year for Hall + Eberle + RNH. Not so good for MPS (though still time to turn that around), but seems like Gagner has rejuvenated himself.

I think it's pretty obvious by now that they were okay with some progress (we aren't the absolute worst team in the league anymore) but were perfectly happy to take another sweet lotto pick.

I don't know if that means they'll start being more aggressive in terms of adding to the defence next year, but I doubt they're crying into their beers about the current situation.

well, I think he's over paid by about 500,000.
hey crappy and/or aging players. go to the oilers and get overpaid with no expectations from the management.

I like sutton, but that much money for a #6/7?
isn't the other defensement out there? Flames fot scott hannon for only 1 million. to me that's more ballpark for that spot in the lineup

You say this based on what? The where they currently sit in the standings?

This season has to be seen as a failure, even if they get rewarded for it in the end.

Couldn't disagree more. He's getting paid right around what he deserves. He's played well for us and can step up into a bigger role in a pinch without looking too out of place

Has Gagner really rejuvenated himself or is this the annual second half Sam that we've always seen. Until Gagner can put together a full season from top to bottom I'm hesitant to say he has turned a corner.

I don't think Sutton can take a bigger role on, if he could he would be doing it now.

Not really intending to take the thread on a sharp left turn but given the choice, if Hemsky would re-up at a reasonable salary, I would rather see the Oilers capitalize on Gagner's current high stock and see him moved instead.

I agree, any increased role by Sutton would have to be the result of a short term injury to one of the other D.

Anything else and the Oilers would be setting themselves up for a world of trouble...yet again.

Yup. He's a little too glacial paced for anything but bottom-pairing minutes.
