Well. I hope the cap goes down next year because all the top teams seem to think they have everyone they need and don't want to overpay anymore come playoff time. I hope an underdog wins this year.

Apparently being 15th in the east means you have to re-sign your entire team

That's a surefire way to improve

Jim Rutherford is a moron. He had a chance to make the playoffs last season and his big moves were swapping out White for Allen and Samsonov for Stillman, and picking up the studly Derek Joslin. Now he has big pieces that could be moved for assets in the future and wants to sign them to long-term extensions, thus tying up close to $30M on a mediocre core that hasn't gotten the job done for the past 4 seasons, but is surely going to do so if they just get three or four more chances.

The injury has nothing to do with whether he's traded or not. Prior to the injury JR has said that his priority is to re-sign Ruutu. Even with the injury, JR has said nothing has changed and he still wants to re-sign him. This injury doesn't change a thing.

White was gone July 1st. Allen had another year left on his contract. I wouldn't call that a moron move.

Stillman >>>> Samsonov. Wouldn't call that a moron move either.

One of the dangers of waiting too long to trade a guy. If he goes down Canes just lost a first round pick and good prospect

If you had read any of the posts or articles that have said the canes are going to try and re-sign him you would know that's not true.

The deadline just keeps getting progressively worse after a great one in 2008.

If McKenzie weighs in on it, then I'd take some stock in that as he has a relationship with Rutherford. Other than that, Rutherford has come out stated nothing has changed as he was working to re-sign him anyhow.

Quote:
Rutherford said Ruutu's injury would not affect or put on hold the ongoing negotiations on a contract extension or reaching a decision on his future with the team.
"It will have no impact," Rutherford said. "The fact that we'd like him to stay and like to re-sign him has not changed in any way."

LeBrun chimes in:

You can also officially scratch Tuomo Ruutu's name off the trade market. That was pretty much the case last week when Carolina Hurricanes GM Jim Rutherford announced he would try to re-sign the pending UFA forward, but now with Ruutu out three to four weeks with an upper body injury, it makes it a moot point. A Canes source confirmed to ESPN.com Tuesday night that Ruutu would not be going anywhere. Talks on a contract extension continue.

Last year, the biggest deal was one that involved none of the so called target UFAs--- Johnson for Stewart. Deals can still come out of nowhere.

What you talkin bout Willis? Trade deadline goes down every year, we have to wait for every 4th year to see Feb 29th.
