Eating Crow -- re: McDonagh and Staal

I was one who vehemently maintained that McDonagh would not pass Staal this year. I am a huge Staal supporter (and still am). But I think what we've seen with McDonagh is better than anything we've ever seen with Staal, so far.

This kid is a future perennial all-star. I expected he'd be near or at Staal's level in a few years. Never did I think he'd grow exponentially like this.

Fantastic to see. I think it was jay9234723947239472394709357203650396iufgd8 that I was disagreeing with and someone else. I still think you guys are ridiculous for advocating Staal to be traded, but I have to come around and admit my "wrong" on this one.

This kid is simply amazing.

I don't think I quite agree, Staal still does some things better than McDonagh. They both have their own strengths but I think Staal at his best was still a bit better.

But it's not exactly a problem I care to complain about!

McDonagh is far more versatile than Staal ever was. I think 2011 Staal is probably slightly better on the back-end, but McDonagh is faster, has a better breakout pass, is stronger, blocks shots better... All this in a second year player (or first and a half year).

Agreed. McDonagh has been invisible on offense for a large stretch before this.

He's not better than Marc. He's damn good though.

You fail to remember that I love Staal. I've defended the guy through all the irrational hatred he got from when he was out to the irrational hatred he gets now. But Staal just can't do what McDonagh was. Just doesn't have the natural talents. You can't teach speed like that. And McDonagh reads the game almost as good, if not just as good, as Staal.

I think I might have been that other guy who was extoling the virtues of McDonagh earlier in the season. Look, we have a pretty special thing going on here especially from a defensive standpoint with this team. There is still a very long way to go and I'm all for upgrading our offense by the deadline BUT not at the cost of messing up the chemistry we have.
The thing that sets McD apart from the other defensemen on the team is his great natural athletic ability and his elite skating talent.
Once Staal gets his sealegs under him, he'll be back to where he was last year and we'll be even stronger defensively. Now if we can only get Sauer healthy than everything wood be honky dory.

Bingo. The one thing that everyone can agree on is we have a fan-****ing-tastic defensive core as of right now. The core of the corps (Staal, McDonagh, Girardi, and Del Zotto) will be here for a LONG time.

Boy, I hope you're right. Now if only we could get rid of the ****** salary cap, than we'd be assured of keeping our team intact!

I admit...I was in the same boat as the OP. But McDonagh has been a beast on defense, as and he is now at least +24 and eating minutes while still on an ELC.

i'm starting to come around to the idea that mcdonagh might one day be better than staal but i'd still take the 100% healthy staal of last year over mcdonagh right now. as tough as mcdonagh has been i think we're forgetting exactly how great staal has been for the last two-three seasons.

I know just how good Staal is since I've defended the guy far too many times on this board to forget!

Staal is the strongest defenseman I seen on the rangers. He bullied ovechkin last year and every big scorer we went against.

I remember teams avoiding their top line against Staal last year

I love McDonagh he is more athletic but Staal got a heavy shot and is excellent at clearing out the front of the net and is awesome at D

Once Staal gets back to 100%, this team's defense is going to be downright ridiculous.

There are still a few things Staal can do in the D zone that McD hasn't shown. If he can learn those things, I'll give him an edge. Until then, I declare it a draw (assuming both players are at their best).

I would take McDonagh over Staal. Imo his defense is at least as good despite not having the size Staal has. And on offense there is no comparison. He might not be putting up massive numbers, but his hands are infinitely better than Staal's

McDonagh is playing as close to perfect defense as it gets

McDonagh has been active in the offensive zone all season long. Just because he didn't put up numbers for a stretch doesn't mean he was invisible

Also remember that he gets almost no PP time. I think he's good enough to be on it, it's just that MDZ is a little better

We're also missing Sauer, who is no slouch himself, and often looks like a solid second pair player.

If there's one thing I think Staal is (or was) much better at it's those subtle little poke checks and passes to get himself and the team out of trouble against a good forecheck (like tonight).

But in general I'm in the same boat as Jonathan. I remember those arguments and in no way did I think McDonagh would be capable of playing at this level this quickly.

Really, out entire Top-4 this year have exceeded our wildest expectations this year.
