Cole. He's a roadrunner.

Plekanec isn't far behind. No one generates as many breakaways as he does without great speed.

Cole followed by Plekanec and Pacioretty. DD reminds me of Cammalleri skating-wise....both above average speed, but for their size could be much faster.

That's not a question that can be answered easily. What kind of speed are we talking about?

There's a chance the fastest player on short distance won't be the fastest player on a straight longer distance, and we might find that another player will be faster if we ask them to skate around the whole ice.

Anyway, here are the results from the last 2 skill competitions. For what it's worth. Only 4 players participated each time.

2012 :
1- Lars Eller, 13.19
2- David Desharnais, 13.49
3- Chris Campoli, 13.58
4- P.K. Subban, 13.92

2011 :
1- Pacioretty 14,26
2- Pyatt 14,42
3- Desharnais 14,65
4- Subban 14,72

Cole. His first 3 strides and hes gone. Really fast down the wing.

Acceleration it has to be Cole.

Eller, Plekanec, Max, Cole are probably the fastest.

I know he is only a bit player on the team but Aaron Palushaj is probably our fastest player.

Cole "looks" like the fastest for sure.

When not injured, Gio is an absolute bullet. I agree that Cole looks faster because of the size element, but I would say in a pure race, Gionta would be our fastest skater.

Cole or Pleks no doubt.

Surprised no one mentioned Kostitsyn. Sure he doesn't have the other's explosive acceleration but he's got such a powerful stride that once he gains momentum, his top speed is just unreal

Lets put it this way, Cole is the most natural skater. Those strides are like speed.

I heard from the Flames board that they lost one of their fastest skaters in Bourque.

He is fast, no doubt. Add to the fact that he's a big boy, it's always fun to see him go for the net.

But... but... Desharnais is SLOW!

My vote goes to Cole.

HM: Plekanec, Gomez, Pacioretty and once he gets going Subban... but I need to pay more attention to Eller's speed!

"Fastest" is a loaded term as it can mean a whole lot. Cole is probably the best combination of top speed, acceleration and nimble. Pacioretty has a good first step, but his top speed is as high as Cole and he doesn't turn as well either. Eller has got good turns and a decent amount of explosive power, but also lacks the high end top speed. Subban might have the best top speed on the team - I remember him blowing by opponents last season on his (in)famous end to end rushes - but he's got to wind up in his own end to reach that top speed whereas Cole goes from zero to top gear in a few strides. Gomez has good speed too - every defender pulls away from the blueline when he gets going because he's moving so fast. Gionta and Desharnais are the best in turns - they lose very little speed on even their tight turns.

Also worthy of note are Emelin and Subban who are very quick going backwards. Emelin is probably the better of the two - he lines up a hip-check and then cuts in before the opponent can move to avoid. Great timing and speed.

Desharnais has the advantage in speed competitions because he has less weight on him to do the sharp turn around the net. In a straight line DD isn't even top 5 on the team speed wise. Which is what counts in game scenarios.

So sharp turns around the net isn't a game scenario A good deal of a hockey game is spent in close quarters and requires quickness not all-out-speed.

At no point in the game does someone need to race from center ice down behind the net, turn around and go back to center ice without stopping once.

Understood. But a quick burst in tight quarters is part of the game.

DD would have an advantage in one of these contrived "speed" contests due to his midgetness (new word?). Smurfs can cut corners faster and don't lose as much momentum as regular people.

What's impressive about both Cole and Bourque is how they can fly despite heavy frames. To me the Habs should always be about speed, so guys like that are very valuable.

As far as fastest skater goes though, it's between Cole and Pleks IMO. Cole is probably the best overall, Pacioretty can compete with him for top speed while Pleks and a few of the defenders have comparable acceleration.

I think Gomez and PK are pretty fast carrying the puck.
