1. In the budget workshop meeting video, the Scruggs twice mentions something about needing to still find another $5,000,000 to satisfy the NHL and not sure where they were going to find it. I would have thought that the NHL would have demanded the full $25M already be placed in an escrow account last year. Why is the city looking for another $5M? See budget video at 18:45 and 35:50
2. Have a good chuckle at the citizen comment section of yesterday's regular meeting. Times: 51:50, 57:10, 1:03:00, 1:18:00
Fair point, I should clarify. Based on what I have already seen of Glendale public records, the full release is going to leave the city defenseless in court. I think the details will certainly be explosive. How large of an explosion is most likely dependent upon how far Goldwater wants to pursue the case and how interested the local media is in covering the story. The decimation will arrive in the form of Goldwater's petition to recover all of their costs, plus any other sanctions the judge sees fit.
Oh, now I am starting to understand Beasley's premature "retirement".
I don't think that the City of Glendale should expect the GWI to take its foot of the gas on this one; not after the public and private taunting and churlish behaviour exhibited by the COG and its functionaries. I would be surprised if the GWI was not "all in" on this one, especially if there is a tinge of blood in the water.
Rather than applying what is essentially "found money" to paying down the Leagues line of credit which was set-up & used quite specifically to buy & operate the Coyotes, cover losses, providing a discount on the ever escalating asking price on the franchise & quite possibly facilitating a sale at a far more reasonable price, the $60M was apparently simply divvied up amongst the 29 clubs.
There's one important point you missed. $60 million might cover 2 years' losses... then what??? The Coyotes have been a financial black hole from day 1. I don't know if any potential purchaser would be willing to take the team for free, if they have to keep it in Glendale. The COG is not capable of shelling out $30 million per year to cover the losses.

1) Do you not agree that the job is quite possibly the single most under-utilized & under-booked Concert & Events venue of its kind in North America?.
2) With hard work, creativity & hubris, the calendar is slowly but surely inked out, resulting in a cash flow that would more than off-set losses on the hockey front while you re-build the markets confidence in YOU YOURSELF & I, signing some UFA's & RFA's, at least going deep in the playoffs & winning back the hearts, minds & imaginations of the paying public.
3) You slowly raise ticket prices, start charging for parking, working with food & beverage suppliers along with merchandisers who as Sponsors will be required to increase added value to the customers with giveaways, deep discounts & freebee's, giving away cars, boats, vacations, road trips, RV's, you name it. Tailgate Partys with NAME acts. On & On. This aint Rocket Science.
4) You work under the now 9year AMUL on an annual basis, a "reasonable" Arena Management Contract negotiated with Glendale at Market Rates, in the range of $5-7M per annum. You buy the franchise from the league for cash of about $90M & assume the balance on their Line of Credit with BankAmerica after, AFTER theyve paid it down to $140M. The Consent Form the league proffers you CAP at $200M, with every nickle of the losses exceeding $140M applied to the value they apply to relocation to a Seattle, Portland, Houston, Cleveland or wherever you might (but wont) have to move to after 3-5yrs if the market doesnt respond.
5) The NHL awards you an All Star Game and a Draft, and dont laugh, though it is hilarious, an OUTDOOR CLASSIC to be played at UofP Stadium on Synthetic Ice, though I betcha the Icemaker Man from Edmonton (best in the league) could prolly pull it off using water and a power plant left over from that Batman movie featuring Arnold as Mr. Freeze.
Ive seen far more distressed businesses effect turnarounds than this Slush Puppy. When all one see's are obstacles, the goal is lost. With creativity, enthusiasm, respect for the market & people of Glendale & Phoenix, this is a piece of cake. Ya, its gonna cost. So what?. Cap it at $200-$250M, go portable if no matter what your just screwed in Arizona, beyond redemption & resurrection. This "project" is not for the feint of heart or quitters, welfare artists or grifters. Sadly, thats just about all the leagues attracted and as such I hold out little hope at this stage in the game. What a F___'n Waste.

They have synthetic ice, and you know, that's an interesting idea. I don't know if it'll ever happen, but could the NHL host an outdoor classic in Phoenix on synthetic ice?
Also, will the NHL ever use synthetic ice in place of real ice?
I've never seen the product in person, only in videos, but it seems like a neat concept.
Not that I think an event like that would save hockey in the desert, it'd just be cool... Hell, they did play an outdoor game in Vegas in the early 90s!

We have the technology Scoobs. Custom size & permanent or portable 4' X 8' interlocking panels. You coat it with a spray-on misting after each period, as fast & slick as the best ice plant surface in a state of the art NHL arena.
And I disagree, not only would staging it be a packed house 80,000 strong moneymaker, it would engender the application of these surfaces in places where ice is only seen in drinks.... sales to muni's, inner city Birmingham, you name it. Why the franchises in a co-op with the NHL, NHLPA & franchises in the Southwest, California, the South & Florida arent all over it I dont know. But this is way off topic...

Just further to the synthetic ice. They brought a sample rink to Winnipeg to try and sell the system to the city for some of the older 60's era rinks that are becoming hard to support as single rink facilities O&M-wise. I got the impression it didn't work as well as hoped, one councillor by the name of Tomas Steen (yes that Steen) didn't seem overly impressed with how it compared to the real thing. You'd never get the NHLPA on board, there'd be 5 broken ankles in a game from what I heard about the stuff.

Thanks for posting this. Pretty interesting. Sadly I could see myself watching this over President's Day.
It is interesting there was no escrow. Maybe they were too broke or something and couldn't do it. Last year the funds for the escrow came out of a one time item related to a settlement on a parking lot deal (forget all the details, but they didn't actually take $ out of a fund... they used found money).

This also caught my attention.

Whoops!
So with the $27 million deficit and the $5 million that they need to find for the Coyotes, the hole is $32 million (56:50), or about $320 per household.
Nope, business as usual, with Bettman saying that "There are some very serious people taking a very serious look at it.", but nothing at all actually happening.
The new thing is that us Québec fans and Seattle citizens are now fighting to the death because there's now a chance they may get the Coyotes once thhe season ends.

I disagree. There are constant developments in the subplots, especially the COG/GWI legal jousting and the COG budget process.

I can imagine that Beasley is counting down the seconds until this becomes SEP ( Somebody Else’s Problem).

No doubt. Thing is, if whatever it is that Tindall's fighting tooth & nail from seeing the light of day anytime soon over the disclosure issue with GW is as potentially "explosive" as suggested?. As David Caruso would say on CSI Miami with a natty flip of his Ray Bans in yet another crime against acting & decent actors everywhere, " you can run, but you cant hide. The physical evidence has your prints & DNA all over it. How do you explain that Mr.Beasley?".
Yes, there is something new. Seattle is about to announce later today a new arena that will be build for both NBA and NHL, so unless some wants to keep this team in Arizona, it looks like the Yotes are likely going to be headed to wither Seattle or Quebec City next year, playing out of temporary venues in either city until the new arena is constructed.

He needs one of these (would have fit better in the last thread, oh well).

An S.E.P or 'Somebody Else's Problem field' is a cheap, easy, and staggeringly useful way of safely protecting something from unwanted eyes. It can run almost indefinitely on a flashlight battery, and is able to do so because it utilizes a person's natural tendency to ignore things they don't easily accept, like, for example, aliens at a cricket match. Any object around which an S.E.P is applied will cease to be noticed, because any problems one may have understanding it (and therefore accepting its existence) become Somebody Else's. An object becomes not so much invisible as unnoticed.
An S.E.P can work in much the same way in dangerous or uninhabitable environments. Any problems which may present itself to a person inside an S.E.P will become Somebody Else's.
An S.E.P can be seen if caught by surprise, or out of the corner of one's eye.

Ya, there have been problems with it that a couple of manufacturers still havent straightened out. Advancements over the past couple of years have been quite significant. Requires further study....

in no way does syn ice come close to being like the real thing....in talking to people who have tried skating on syn ice, it could never ever be used for a professional type of situation. When the nhl season started in wpg, they brought syn ice and had people try it...it was a huge failure!

Some of it is. Like I said, depends on the manufacturer & c'mon here, it was just a not so crazy suggestion I had to stage an OUTDOOR CLASSIC at UofP Stadium. If we can send Man to the Moon using basic cell phone technology, pretty sure you could find the means & ways to create a suitable ice surface in a desert climate.
Now, lets try & get this thread back on track before I get infracted for derailing it for about the 7,207th time.
