People should keep in mind that the difference between 13th and 4th in the West is tiny. Injuries and mindset is everything.

A bit off topic, but the main thread on the Wild's fortunes on the main board just has me up in arms. Oh man going from 1st overall to now is just comedy for the main board.

Maybe, next year we'll wait a bit longer until we shove it everyone's faces.

BTW; better names out there on defense than offense this offseason...keep that in mind.

Considering the names for forwards are Parise and...I guess Semin is UFA isn't he? Yeah, that's it.

The names on defense are Suter...Carle...Wideman (probably will be re-signed) and a bunch of guys on the wrong side of 30.

Free agent market this year is beyond weak.

Well, I looked at the summer UFA D-Men finally...

In looking at the summer crop of UFA defensemen, about the only one that I would consider as a viable Suter alternatives would be Matt Carle or Colaiacovo.

Out of the two, I like what Colaiacovo brings to the table, but I also don't like his injury history. We don't need a dman which is injury prone.

Carle will more than likely be re-signed by the Flyers.

A veteran that has always intrigued me with the way he plays the game is Corvo, but I know a lot of folks here aren't high on him. His first pass is probably better than everyone the Wild has right now, minus Spurgeon.

He is also a good point man on the power play, but needs a feeder to be effective. His shot isn't all that great, but he is a good alternative to the high price tag that others will cost.

Jason Garrison is intriguing, but my opinion is tempered by the fact that he has benefited from playing with Campbell a lot. His numbers are inflated because of that and I don't want to get into a Jeff Schultz type of situation where he looks really good alongside Green, but then sucks ballz when Green goes out of the lineup.

I dunno... I'd like to look at picking up a good PMD that is actually under contract, but that skillset is apparently becoming something of a rarity...

Can't say I agree. The Flyers are in the 8th circle of cap hell. They need to sign 2+ defensemen, give Vorachek a raise, and replace Jagr all for under $6MM + Cap increase. Assuming Vorachek gets $4MM, you're looking at 2D + top 6 wing for around $8MM. Carle will probably make close to his current salary so that's $3.5MM if he's signed. Unless they pull in some ELCs they're going to have some issues. And then there's the Pronger issues...

I'd say we don't brag about being high in the standings... Always seems to backfire. To every team.

I had a big post going about how Voracek and Jagr are going to be resigned and who they are going to drop and all this...and I ended up coming to the conclusion that they are still ****ed

Maybe trade Briere to Montreal for a package including Subban? Would solve problems on both teams. Montreal wants a Quebecois/French-Canadian face of the franchise, Briere could be that guy. Philly needs help on the back-end, Subban could be a troll that fits in well with the rest of the team?

There are a lot of serviceable defenseman in this year's UFA. Yeah no top tier guys but a lot of guys that can eat up minutes.

There's only 1 guy on that list who's guaranteed to be in the NHL next year.

I'm agreeing with saywut. None of those guys move the needle. Suter or bust. With Zidlicky gone, we can throw big, big money at Suter without hurting the team.

I look at our situation a lot like Chicago's a few seasons before they won the cup. Yeah, Campbell's contract was HUGE. But that guy was very, very important to their team and the blueline started sucking the moment he left. When they signed him, they gave him #1 money when everyone thought he wasn't a #1 guy. And at that time Seabrook was very inconsistent and nobody understood Keith's ceiling. But the funny thing is that it didn't really matter that Campbell wasn't a true #1 Dman. What mattered was that he was a big position of need and once he was on that blueline, everybody just fit and started clicking.

But Campbell gets signed, he takes pressure off Keith and Seabrook, who both took the next step. Then you have a rookie Hjarm stepping up, and a vet Sopel locking down the #5. Bam, solid blueline is born.

Not saying that Suter would turn the Wild's blueline into the Hawks when they won the cup, but I think he would go a long, long way in creating a very good blueline.

Suter, Schultz, Spurgeon, and Schultz would be a decent top-4 while Brodin, Falk, and Prosser grew into their own. And when that happens, our blueline will be very good.

Lundin was a top-4 d-man on a playoff team last year. While a few of those players will be in the NHL next year, only one is guaranteed to be there. I know I wouldn't give a 1-way contract to any of the other 9.

I wonder if Fletcher would trade a forward prospect for a quality top-4 Dman if he strikes out on free agency.

At this point I'm getting kinda hesitant about how much we'll actually be able to get this off-season via free-agency. Weren't we saying last year how much better this year's free agency would be player-wise and now everyone's saying it's another weak class.

Aside from Carle and Suter, what free agent d-men are even worth going after this year? Wideman and Campoli maybe?

They have all proven they can play in the NHL though.

All the good free agents re-signed already. Heck, even the not so good ones have re-signed.
